Lee Byung-hun (born July 12, 1970 in Seongnam , South Korea ) is a South Korean actor . He is best known for roles in Park Chan-wook's Joint Security Area , GI Joe - Cobra and the television series IRIS , as well as for his collaboration with director Kim Jee-woon in his films The Good, the Bad, the Weird and Bittersweet Life .
Career
Lee applied for and was accepted for the 1991 KBS Super Talent Audition, making his debut in the TV drama Asphalt My Hometown . His breakthrough came in Park Chan-wook's film Joint Security Area (2000) . He played a border guard soldier alongside Lee Yeong-ae and Song Kang-ho . The film was a commercial success and also received critical acclaim. He broke records with the highest grossing in Korean history. Lee's performance earned him best actor along with Song Kang-ho at the Pusan Film Critics Awards . The following year he starred in the 2001 film Bungee Jumping of Their Own as a man whose girlfriend dies and is reborn as a boy.
In 2001 he played the lead role in the television series Beautiful Days . He played Lee Min-chul , an arrogant entrepreneur who fell for an innocent orphan (played by Choi Ji-woo). In 2003 he took on the lead role in the drama All In . Lee received the Grand Prize in the SBS Theater Awards and Best Actor in the Baeksang Arts Awards. In 2004, Lee appeared in the romantic comedy Everybody Has Secrets .
In 2005 he received applause for his performance in Kim Jee-woon's film A Bittersweet Life , which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival. Lee was nominated for Best Actor at the Blue Dragon Awards and Grand Bell Awards , and won the Chunsa Film Art Awards, Paeksang Arts Awards, and the Critics Choice Awards. He also appeared in the romance film Once in a Summer .
He played his first villain role in The Good, the Bad, the Weird, a Korean western directed by Kim Jee-woon . The film revolves around three men who want to acquire a treasure map in a race and was also a huge hit. In 2009 he made his American debut as Storm Shadow in GI Joe - Cobra .
In late 2009, Lee returned with the TV action thriller Iris starring Kim Tae-hee and Kim So-yeon . He played the role of Hyun-jun, a secret agent who finds himself at the center of an international conspiracy. It was one of the most expensive shows to be produced in various locations such as Hungary, Japan and South Korea. It became one of the highest-rated dramas of 2009, and its performance earned it the Grand Prix of the KBS Theater Acting Awards and Best Actor in the Baeksang Arts Awards.
2010 Lee with Choi Min-sik in the film I Saw the Devil by Kim Jee-woon played. He played Soo-hyun, a secret agent who chases a serial killer who murdered his fiancée. In 2012 he returned as Storm Shadow in GI Joe - The Reckoning . In 2013, Lee stars in the US film RED 2 alongside Bruce Willis , Catherine Zeta-Jones , Helen Mirren and John Malkovich , which is a sequel to the action comedy RED - Older, Harder, Better . The film was released in German-speaking cinemas in September 2013.
Other work
Lee served as a model for the main character of the video game Lost Planet from Capcom , released the beginning of 2007.
Lee founded BH Entertainment, a management agency that oversees many actors including Han Ga-in and Han Ji-min . He also owns a BHNC store that sells hats, scarves and wallets.
Private life
He has a younger sister, Lee Eun-hee, who was Miss Korea in 1996. He studied at Hanyang University with a major in French literature and at the Graduate School of Chung-Ang University with a focus on theater and film. On August 10, 2013, he married actress Lee Min-jung . They have a son together.
On September 2, 2014, Lee Byung-hun informed the police that two women (model Lee Ji Yeon and Dahee, member of the girl group GLAM) were blackmailing him with compromising video material. The two suspected women were then arrested and sentenced to prison terms in the subsequent trial. Before and during the process, Internet users started a petition in which they asked companies and companies to discontinue or remove from their range of advertisements and other advertising products bearing the likeness of Lee Byung-hun, as it was suggested several times that Lee Byung-hun was had an affair with Lee Ji Yeon, which he denied. Some companies followed this petition. Lee Byung-hun's image was seriously damaged by the scandal over a possible affair.
In April 2015, he and Lee Min Jung became parents of a son.
Awards
In 2006, during the Busan International Film Festival, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight) from Philippe Thiebaud , the then French ambassador to South Korea.
