The Fortress (Original title: Namhansanseong ) is a period film by the South Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk from 2017. It is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Kim Hoon and deals with the incursion of the Chinese Qing Dynasty into Korea during the Joseon Dynasty in 1636 . The Korean King Injo has holed up behind the Namhansanseong Fortress and is planning his next move to avoid submission by the Qing.

action

The Manchurian forces of the Qing Dynasty invade Korea with 130,000 troops to secure the support of King Injo of Joseon. Korea continues to support the Chinese Ming Dynasty . The king holed up behind the fortress of Namhansanseong in view of the strength of the Manchurians. Choi Myung-kil is sent to the Manchur general to work towards a peaceful solution. Korea should end the brotherhood with the Ming and instead accept the Qing as rulers. In addition, the Crown Prince is to be handed over to the Qing as a signal of connection. But the king refuses.

The king remains in Namhansanseong and always stands between the question of making an agreement with the Qing that would result in loss of face, or seeking battle. Above all, the adviser Choi Myung-kil stands for the peaceful path, which in his opinion paves the way for the population to survive. However, adviser Kim Sang-hun advocates fighting, as death is better than a life in shame.

A big problem for the Korean troops in Namhansanseong is the cold and the lack of food. While most advisors show little understanding for the problems of the population and the soldiers, both Kim and Choi stand up for them. By chance, Kim meets the armorer Seo Nal-soi, who keeps conveying the mood among the population to him. Through him, Kim campaigns to give the soldiers straw from the roofs so that they don't freeze in the cold winter. However, on the advice of the Prime Minister, this was reversed, as the horses need the straw to eat. But it turns out that this arouses discontent among the soldiers, as they hardly have to eat themselves. Kim and Choi are able to convince the king to slaughter the horses because the soldiers are more important than horses.

Meanwhile, Choi can also find out that the Khan should come to Korea. Still, the king is averse to the peaceful solution that Choi proposes. The army is planning a surprise attack on the Manchurian troops with the prime minister. However, it is an ambush by the Qing and the Joseon force is virtually wiped out. The prime minister must subsequently resign.

Ultimately, the king chooses the path of a decisive battle, as requested by Kim Sang-hun. However, he also secretly sends Choi out with a letter from the king after the king complies with the khan's demands. The Manchurians break off the attack. Shortly afterwards, the king kowtows before the khan and his kingdom pays tribute to the Qing. The Qing take 500,000 Korean soldiers away.
