action
In the process of leading a normal life with his girlfriend Sarah Ross, while shopping in a supermarket, ex-agent Frank Moses is advised by friend and ex-agent Marvin Boggs not to feel safe because there are still enough people who tried to kill him. Frank listens to Marvin, but thinks his fears are exaggerated. He leaves Marvin and tries to appease Sarah, who would like to have another adventure. The two witnesses see Marvin's car exploding just as he is about to leave the supermarket parking lot.
Although Frank is not convinced that Marvin is dead, Sarah persuades him to go to Marvin's funeral. Frank tries to convince himself of Marvin's death by pricking the deceased's hand. At Sarah's insistence, he gives a laudation to his best friend, which moves him to tears himself. After the funeral, a group of government agents meet Frank and take him to an interrogation room. During the interrogation, the double agent Jack Horton appears and kills most of the investigative agency's staff. Jack threatens Frank that he will torture Sarah to get information from Frank.
Frank manages to escape with the help of Marvin, who had actually only faked his death. The two flee together with Sarah. Marvin explains that he and Frank are being hunted down as participants in a secret operation codenamed Nightshade . The assignment was to smuggle a special nuclear weapon piece by piece into Russia during the Cold War . Horton had managed to convince the government that Frank and his team were terrorists and needed to be stopped. Friend and ex-agent Victoria calls and tells them that she was forced to accept MI6 's assignment to kill Frank. Meanwhile, Horton has hired the top hit man Han Cho-Bai, a long-time opponent of Moses, also to kill Frank.
Frank, Marvin and Sarah set off for Paris to track down an informant nicknamed "The Frog". They do this by stealing Han's plane. The angry Han, in league with the Americans, goes on the hunt for them. When they arrive in Paris, they are greeted by the attractive Katja Petrokovich, a Russian secret agent with whom Frank had a relationship at the beginning of his career. Katja is also looking for Nightshade and teams up with them to find the frog. They set a trap for the frog in a restaurant, he can escape them, but is then caught by Katja and Frank and brought to his house. After a brutal but unsuccessful questioning by Katja and Frank, the jealous Sarah woos the frog to help and outsmart Katja. The frog is carried away and gives them the key to his safe deposit box. A little later Katja put Frank out of action with drugs, stole his key and tried to get to the contents of the locker on her own. Marvin had already expected something like this and therefore gave Frank the wrong key. He, Frank and Sarah later find documents in the locker that refer to Dr. Edward Bailey, a brilliant physicist, pointed out who was the creator of Operation Nightshade .
They find out that Bailey is still alive and has been hidden in a heavily guarded psychiatric clinic for the criminally insane in London for 32 years . After arriving in London on the stolen jet, they meet Victoria, who fakes a successful assassination attempt on the three in order to buy more time. Victoria takes her to the mental institution where Bailey is hiding and then acts the lunatic to gain access to the clinic. Frank and Victoria find the confused Bailey, who is drugged, hyperactive , and does not answer their questions. After a while, Bailey remembers that the bomb is still in Moscow . Frank, Marvin and Sarah travel to Moscow with him, and after a brief encounter with Han, Bailey concludes that he hid the bomb in the Kremlin . They break into the Kremlin and Bailey looks for the bomb. They find out that it is a legendary red atomic bomb made from red mercury . Before they can leave the Kremlin with the bomb, Katja stopped them. Frank convinces his former lover to take his side. As everyone celebrates the successful escape with the bomb from the Kremlin, Victoria calls from London and explains to Frank that Bailey was locked up because he wanted to detonate the bomb and kill millions of people in Moscow. Holding Frank at gunpoint, Bailey confirms Victoria's message and that he has a deal with Horton and the Americans. Thereupon he kills Katja and leaves the other three to the Russian military, who wants to shoot them. Shortly before the order to shoot, the three of them are rescued by the rushed Victoria and her Russian lover (and ex-agent) Ivan Simanov.
Horton fails to keep his deal with Bailey and locks him in a cage during the flight to London, with the intention of later using his mastermind. But Bailey kills the entire crew except Horton with a neurotoxin he created and hidden in the heel of his shoe.
In London, Bailey flees to the Iranian embassy to sell the bomb there. When Frank tries to follow, he is confronted with Han. After a painful fight, Frank convinces Han to switch sides and secure the bomb with him. Together, the five develop a plan to get Bailey and the bomb back.
Sarah first seduces the Iranian ambassador in a bar, then takes him hostage under the pretext of strengthening women's rights in Iran. Marvin meanwhile smuggles himself into the Iranian embassy as a supposed defector and stages a plumbing problem as a diversionary maneuver, while Frank and Han come in disguised as plumbers to solve the problem. While Frank and Sarah's troops are trying to gain access to the safe, Bailey has received the money for the bomb from the Iranians and kills all the men, including Horton. When Frank, Sarah, Marvin, Victoria and Han get into the safe where the sold bomb is stored, they discover that Bailey has already activated the detonator. Bailey kidnaps Sarah and drives to the airport to escape the impending explosion and the wiping out of London with Han's plane. Frank, Marvin, Victoria, and Han go on a chase with the bomb in the suitcase while they are being chased by the Iranian embassy guards and Marvin tries unsuccessfully to defuse the bomb. When Frank arrives at the plane and confronts Bailey with the bomb, he and Sarah are forced by Bailey to leave the plane with the bomb case. When Bailey takes off, the others arrive at the airport. While everyone is waiting for an imminent death, the plane suddenly explodes high in the sky. Frank reveals that he deposited the bomb in the front part of the plane as soon as he entered the plane and only presented the empty suitcase to Bailey.
The film closes with a scene in a Latin American bar where Sarah is having fun during a joint mission with Frank and Marvin.

production
In January 2011, writers Jon and Erich Hoeber were hired by Summit Entertainment to write a second edition of RED - Older, Harder, Better , due to the film's financial success, which even exceeded producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura's expectations. Helen Mirren announced in March 2011 that she was ready for RED 2 . In October 2011, Summit announced that RED 2 would be released on August 2, 2013. In February 2012, Dean Parisot, best known for directing Galaxy Quest and Dick and Jane , entered into final negotiations to direct the sequel.
In May 2012, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Lee Byung-hun signed the casting agreements for RED 2 . Also in May it was reported that Anthony Hopkins would appear as the villain Edward Bailey if a clash with Thor - The Dark Kingdom could be avoided. In July 2012, Neal McDonough entered into negotiations to cast RED 2 .
In August 2012 it was announced that RED 2 would be filmed in Montreal from September . The city was chosen because of a 25 percent tax rebate from the province of Québec and its similarity to European cities (settings included London , Paris and Moscow ). In September 2012, David Thewlis was cast as The Frog , a news trader who got his nickname for poisoning the Kremlin's water supply with poison from a frog from the Amazon . Filming began in Montreal in late September, production moved to Paris in mid-October and then stayed in London until the end of the month. In March 2013, Summit moved the release of the film from August 2, 2013 to July 19, 2013. Production costs were $ 84 million.
Others
The children's photos of Han Cho-bai (Lee Byung-hun) and his father shown in the film are actually photos of Lee with his father, who died in 2000. Lee's father was a fan of Hollywood movies and had dreamed of being an actor. When Lee told this story to director Dean Parisot, he was so touched that he decided to end Lee's father as one of the main characters in the credits, although the photos are only briefly shown in the film.
reception
success
RED 2 was released in North America on July 19, 2013. On his first weekend the film grossed 18.5 million dollars and was up to fifth place. The grossing was lower than its predecessor at $ 21.8 million in October 2010. According to surveys, 67% of viewers were over 35 and 52% were male. By September 8, 2013, RED 2 had grossed around $ 52.5 million in North America and around $ 119.6 million worldwide.
Reviews
Since the film has to do without Morgan Freeman from the first part, but instead uses Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins , FILMSTARTS.de judges: "The playful Hollywood titans do not let the newcomer behind the camera down, On the contrary, they use every chance to simply hit the black, humorous comedy plaster without any false restraint. "
kino.de also praises the commitment and quality of the actors. In addition, it can be read: “The continuation of the film adaptation of a black-humored graphic novel convinces with more exotic locations, sophisticated and intricate plot and even more elaborate stunts and car chases and goes even more directly to the point than its predecessor - breathtaking chases on water, on land and in the air included. "
- In the case of the serial junkies , the actors and also the plot come off less well:
“Bruce Willis and his retirees are going to save the world for the second time. The result is a tired, cynical Mission-Impossible clone with embarrassing savings jokes and an almost comatose leading actor. "
“Everything has style and dignity. Yet what makes 'RED 2' above the action dozen is a complication in the plot. Frank Moses is now in a relationship with Sarah Ross (Mary-Louise Parker), with the delightful pension clerk that we already know from the first part 'RED', which was released in 2010. "
continuation
Even before the premiere, Jon and Erich Hoeber signed a contract for a third script in the series with Lionsgate in May 2013 .
Due to the significantly higher production costs of 84 million USD compared to its predecessor (58 million USD), the unexpectedly poor box office results (148 million USD compared to the first film with 199 million USD) and the rather negative criticism, the sequel has not yet been released tackled.
