The Tele München Gruppe ( TMG ) is a media company based in Munich .

The activities of the Tele München Group include license trading , holding television and radio broadcasting interests, cinema, video and TV distribution as well as television and film production. It also has one of the largest film libraries in Europe.

history

Tele München GmbH was founded on April 27, 1970 by the author and producer Walter Ulbrich and bought in 1977 by Herbert Kloiber and his business partner Fritz Buttenstedt. Concorde Filmverleih was founded in 1980 and one year later, in 1981, the company acquired cinemas in Hamburg , Berlin and Braunschweig together with the cinema operator Hans-Joachim Flebbe .

In 1985 Tele München became a partner in Sat.1 , but ended its engagement a year later to start the Musicbox television station . In the same year Tele München took over the Munich private radio station Radio Xanadu , which was later renamed Radio Energy .

In 1987, Silvio Berlusconi's company Fininvest acquired 50 percent of Musicbox, creating the basis for the Tele 5 station . In 1988 Axel Springer Verlag and CLT took a share in the Tele München group of companies, 50 percent of which were sold to Capital Cities / ABC in 1989 .

In 1991 Tele München sold its Tele-5 stake to Axel Springer Verlag and just one year later, in 1992, together with CLT, Bertelsmann and Heinrich Bauer Verlag, founded the TV station RTL II . In 1995 the TV station tm3 was launched by Tele München (TMG) and Heinrich Bauer Verlag.

In 1996 Herbert Kloiber bought back the shares in Tele München from Capital Cities / ABC and took over the shares of Heinrich Bauer Verlag in tm3. In 1997 TMG took a stake in the Hungarian private broadcaster TV2 .

In 1998, Rupert Murdoch's company News Corporation , 66 percent of TM3 and two years later, in 2000, the News Corporation took over the station completely.

On April 28, 2002, the Tele 5 broadcaster was restarted by the Tele München Group.

In 2008, Tele-München Fernseh GmbH & Co production company, together with HKL Medienbeteiligungs GmbH & Co KG, also held by Herbert Kloiber, took over the Austrian TV broadcaster ATV . The broadcaster announced in a broadcast: “The sale of the BAWAG PSK share package in the Austrian private broadcaster ATV to the main shareholder Herbert Kloiber has been finalized. Kloiber now holds 99.67 percent of ATV. "

In February 2019 TMG was taken over by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.
