Musicbox ( original spelling musicbox ) was the first German music channel on television. It started in 1984, first as a cable pilot project and then as a nationwide television channel. In 1988 the station was converted into Tele 5 .

history

Musicbox broadcast a 24-hour program with video clips and music programs. The station was located on Schellingstrasse in Munich . Musicbox started on January 1, 1984, alongside Sat.1 (formerly PKS), the ZDF music channel and other stations, as the first German music station in the Ludwigshafen cable pilot project and could only be received there. Musicbox was founded by Wolfgang Fischer , program director was Jochen Kröhne . The program was later broadcast nationwide by cable and satellite ( Intelsat ), in Munich at times even via antenna .

The programs had a high amount of editorial information; there was a separate program for almost every popular musical genre. Initially, the daily broadcasting time extended from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., which was later expanded to include a 24-hour program. While moderated music magazines dominated during the day, videos were often broadcast non-stop at night or repetitions of the day's programs.

In 1988, due to changes in the shareholder structure, the music station was converted into the full program Tele 5 . The Italian media mogul Silvio Berlusconi bought a 45 percent stake in the production company. On January 11, 1988, the live broadcast Tschau musicbox - Hallo Tele 5 , moderated by Werner Schulze-Erdel , saw the name change to Tele 5 at midnight. But even with Tele 5, music still played a major role in the early days. Some programs and moderators from Musicbox were included in the Tele-5 program. Musicbox founder Wolfgang Fischer took a 10 percent stake in Tele 5, the other shares in Tele 5 belonged to Silvio Berlusconi and Herbert Kloiber , each with 45 percent.

The former music editor had become self-employed after the conversion to Tele 5. The production company MME Me, Myself & Eye Entertainment was founded and took over the entire music video archive. To this day, MME has produced various music and entertainment programs for almost all well-known German television stations. The music channel VH-1 , founded in the 1990s , was also supplied with former jukebox videos.

Stars at Musicbox

Almost all well-known German musicians of the 1980s were guests in the Musicbox studios, where music videos were also shot. So the clip I love you no longer plays by Udo Lindenberg directly in the transmitter building. You can see the Musicbox logos in the video and the broadcast control room has been given a special role.
