Ashfall (Original title: Baekdusan ) is a South Korean disaster film directed by Kim Byung-seo and Lee Hae-jun from 2019. The leading roles are Lee Byung-hun , Ha Jung-woo , Ma Dong-seok , Jeon Hye-jin and Bae See Suzy . The film is about the eruption of the Paektusan volcano (revised Romanization: Baekdusan ), which lies on the North Korean-Chinese border . A team of South Korean experts is working to prevent a disaster.

On the Chinese-North Korean border, there is a surprising eruption of Korea's highest volcano, Baekdusan . This triggers a severe earthquake in both Koreas. Seismologists warn that this is just a pre- eruption and a super-eruption is yet to come. The South Korean government is taking emergency measures immediately. Korean-American seismologist Kang Bong-rae, also known as Robert, says there is a way to stop the eruption. However, the chances of success are low. A nuclear explosion under the volcano is supposed to take the pressure off the magma.
The denuclearization of North Korea is under way and the last six nuclear-armed ICBMs are due to be handed over to the United States. South Korea is planning to send a team to North Korea under the presidential adviser Jeon Yoo-kyung to meet with informant Ri Jun-pyeong, who knows where the missiles are. A team of experts should defuse this. Among other things, the explosives expert Jo In-chang is hired for this. He would be released from the military the next day. He reluctantly takes part in the mission. His thoughts are with his wife Ji-young, who is in the terminal stages of her pregnancy. He doesn't tell her that he is being sent to North Korea.
The mission to North Korea starts badly. The military unit's plane crashes. This leaves only the technical unit. Jo In-chang is made captain of the unit by the chief of operations. You can track down Ri in a North Korean prison. This leads the team to the base where the missiles are kept. However, they are attacked by Americans who mistake them for North Korean soldiers. In Seoul, meanwhile, the US military takes the lead and contradicts the South Koreans' plan. The missiles would have to be handed over to the USA.
But Jeon Yoo-kyung continues the mission in secret. Jo's troops can defuse the bombs, pack the uranium in their own explosive device and first shake off the Americans. But Ri Jun-pyeong has other plans. He wants to hand the uranium over to Chinese gangsters, in return he is escorted to China with his daughter. After some back and forth, however, he leaves the explosives to Jo while he makes himself his daughter. But without the uranium, he is worthless to the gangsters and gets shot. But then Jo comes. Kang Bong-rae's plan has changed and he needs the card that only Jo has. He activates the explosives. Then the gangsters and the American soldiers withdraw. This means that Jo and Ri have little time to plant the bomb in the Baekdusan mines. At the last moment, Ri shakes off Jo. Jo should take care of his daughter. He is the only one he still trusts. Reluctantly, Jo escapes from the Baekdusan while the warheads detonate. There is no further earthquake.
A year later, Jo lives with Ji-young and her son, as well as Ri's daughter, in an apartment in Seoul. The news says that the reconstruction of the Korean Peninsula continues.
