Inside Men - The Revenge of Justice (Original title: Naebujadeul ) is a crime film by the South Korean director Woo Min-ho from 2015. It is a film adaptation of the webtoon of the same name by Yoon Tae-ho . The lead roles are Lee Byung-hun , Cho Seung-woo and Baek Yoon-sik . With over 9.1 million tickets sold, it is the most successful film in South Korean cinema history without a youth rating .
action
The film is essentially about three characters. Lee Kang-hee is the editor of an influential, conservative daily newspaper. With his power as a publisher, he built the politician Jang Pil-woo into a promising presidential candidate. Ahn Sang-goo is a gangster who supports both of them. However, he is caught taking a list of bribes. Jang Pil-woo's people chop off one of his hands. At the same time, prosecutor Woo Jang-hoon is investigating Lee and Jang. Ahn plans his revenge and meets Woo. Together they take action against Lee and Jang and want to expose the corruption.
background
The story Inside Men comes from the comic book artist ( Manhwaga ) Yoon Tae-ho . Before Inside Men , this published the popular Webtoons Moss and Misaeng , which were also made into films. Inside Men was first published through the Hankyoreh Shinmun newspaper website from 2010 to 2012. But Yoon stopped writing the story because of his own political conflict. He felt that he was not able to express the political situation very well. He also describes himself as relatively conservative, in contrast to the characters he created in the Webtoon. So he wasn't sure whether it could lead the comic series to a happy ending.
The film differs in parts from the Webtoon. While a photojournalist is the protagonist of the plot in the Webtoon, Woo Min-ho changed the role to a righteous prosecutor. Main actor Cho Seung-woo, who is a fan of the Webtoon himself, initially turned down the role because it was not on the Webtoon. However, Woo was ultimately able to persuade him to accept the role.
reception
Inside Men received mostly positive reviews. For Maggie Lee of Variety , the film is an overwhelming, political revenge thriller and compares the film to Infernal Affairs . For Dal Yong Jin, the success of Inside Men was not only due to the high quality Webtoon, but also to the political situation in South Korea in the mid-2010s. In 2015 and 2016 there were numerous political thrillers with corrupt authorities, politicians, companies and the media. In Inside Men , the owner of a newspaper is the political kingmaker. Meanwhile, the South Korean population is increasingly frustrated by the nepotism of the chaebols (large companies, conglomerates), politicians and the media. This is how Inside Men hits the crowd. South Korea also experienced the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye due to corruption. Even if the protagonist of Inside Men is a gangster, the audience sympathized with him because he breaks the chain of corruption. Many also wanted this justice in real life.
