The Blue House or Cheongwadae in Seoul is the seat and residence of the President of South Korea . The name of the house comes from the blue-green color of the roof. The Blue House actually consists of several buildings that were built in the traditional Korean style with modern elements. The entire complex covers an area of ​​approximately 250,000 m².

history

Before that, the Gyeongbok Palace, built in 1395, stood on the site , destroyed in 1592 and rebuilt in 1868. During the Japanese rule (1910-1945) it was demolished and a new building was erected for the Japanese governor general.

When the Republic of Korea was founded in 1948, the South Korean President took his official residence in one of the old buildings.

In 1968, 31 men from Unit 124 of the North Korean People's Army tried to loot the Blue House and assassinate President Park Chung-hee . 28 North Koreans, 26 South Koreans and four Americans were killed in the attack.

Construction began on July 22, 1989 and was completed on September 4, 1991.
