Ray Park
Raymond "Ray" Park (born August 23, 1974 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a British stuntman and actor . He became known for his role as Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace .
Earlier life
Ray Park was born in the Scottish city of Glasgow and moved to London with his family at the age of six . He is the older of two brothers.
Park was introduced to the world of martial arts at an early age by his father, an enthusiastic Bruce Lee fan, and at the age of seven he began to practice Chinese "Northern Shaolin Kung Fu ". At the age of fourteen he also practiced wushu and kickboxing . At sixteen, Park won the Great Britain's Martial Arts National Championship for his age group. He then traveled to Malaysia to professionally improve his skills. He competed in various martial arts competitions around the world and won several awards before entering the film business in the late 1990s.
Film career
He began his film career as a stuntman and doubled in 1997 in Mortal Kombat 2 the actors Robin Shou and James Remar . He also portrayed a few of the monsters that appear in the film in cameo appearances, but these were silent roles and Park could not speak.
In 1999, Park played the Zabrak and Sith Lord Darth Maul in George Lucas ' Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace . For this he was additionally trained in sword fighting by the stunt coordinator Nick Gillard . Because his own voice did not seem suitable to the producers due to the strong Scottish accent, the few sentences that Park spoke in the film were dubbed by the actor Peter Serafinowicz . Based on his role in Star Wars , Park also had a cameo in the 2009 comedy Fanboys as a security guard at the Skywalker Ranch , who pulls two batons with the words "Time for you to get mauled, boy" . Park returned in 2018 for Solo: A Star Wars story in the role jaw back.
Also in 1999 Park starred in Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow , where he acted as a "Fight Double" for Christopher Walken . Park appeared in the scene in which the Headless Horseman murders a family and other local residents. In 2000, the native of Scots played the frog-like mutant Toad in Bryan Singer 's first X-Men film in his first independent speaking role. In 2002 he appeared in Ballistic alongside Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu .
In 2008, Park was part of the motion capture team for the James Bond video game Quantum of Solace . In 2009, Park played the role of Snake Eye in GI Joe - Cobra's Secret Order , but it was again a silent and hooded role. In the same year he was also seen in the television series Heroes as a recurring character Edgar . In 2013, Park reappeared in GI Joe's role as Snake Eye .
Park is married and has two children.
