Mortal Kombat 2 - Annihilation (also for short: Mortal Kombat 2 ) is an American action and fantasy film by director John R. Leonetti from 1997 and the sequel to Mortal Kombat .

action

Liu Kang, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage, the fearless fighters of Lord Raiden and Princess Kitana, defeated the warlords of the outside world and saved the earth from destruction in the final battle called "Mortal Kombat". But the supposed salvation is short-lived. The gates to the outside world open again, and the dreaded ruler of darkness, Shao Khan and his fearsome comrades-in-arms Cyrax and Smoke, the rocket-throwing cyber ninjas, Sheeva, the four-armed fighting machine, and Sindel, the fearsome embodiment of death, want the earth incorporate. If the gates stay open for seven days, the world as we know it is destroyed - so there are only six days left to save the earth.

criticism

"This martial arts fantasy action after the video game leaves us at a loss ... The first 'Mortal Kombat' film still offered ' Highlander ' Christopher Lambert and a minimum of story."

"Dull nonsense with a lot of trickery, which is primarily aimed at brutal beatings that are underlaid with cheap techno sound."

Trivia

  • Many characters were cast for the second part, including Raiden, Sonya and Jax.
  • Keith Cooke plays Sub-Zero here. In the first part he took on the role of the reptile.
  • Lynn Red Williams has become known as one of the American Gladiators from the television show of the same name.
  • Many moves were taken one-to-one from the video game template, e.g. B. Sub-Zero's "Ice-Clone".
  • Liu Kang's kite frame hardly resembles the one from the game series and can only be seen in the Fatality.
  • Shao Khan cannot transform into a multi-headed monster in any of the games.
  • The relationships between Raiden, Shao Khan and Shinnok do not appear in the games.
  • The characters Kabal and Stryker are only mentioned by name.
  • The story is largely based on Mortal Kombat 3 . Characters like Nightwolf and Sheeva also appear in the film, who only made their first appearances in MK 3. Likewise, the transformation referred to in the film as the “animalistic side” only occurs in the third part and is called Animality there.
  • John R. Leonetti was still the cameraman in the predecessor, this is his first directorial work.
