action

3067 BC The Scorpio King , an imposing warrior, sets out to conquer the world. After a seven-year battle, he is defeated and driven with his army into the sacred desert of Ahm Shere . All of his men die one by one on the way there. As the last survivor, he finally offers Anubis a pact: God should give him life and victory over his enemies and receive his soul in return. Anubis accepts the pact by sending him a scorpion, which the king immediately devours. This creates a magnificent oasis around the king , which from now on is his refuge and home. In order to make it easier for him to defeat his enemies, he also receives from Anubis to support his army. As expected, the Scorpio King defeats all his enemies, whereupon Anubis seizes his soul and forces the King to serve him for all eternity. The army of Anubis is sent back to the desert, where it "waits in silence".

1933. Rick and Evelyn O'Connell , the protagonists from The Mummy , have now married and have a child together with the now eight-year-old Alexander . During excavations in a temple in the Thebes area , Rick is looking for his nosy son, while Evelyn keeps having mysterious visions that tell her of a previous life. In the catacombs of the temple, the couple finally find Anubis's bracelet, which points the way to the resting place of the Scorpion King. At around the same time, the mysterious Meela Nais , a reincarnation of Anck-Su-Namun , and a horde of mercenaries led by the cold-blooded Lock-Nah manage to excavate the sunken Hamunaptra and recover the mummy Imhoteps . Since Meela learned of the O'Connell's discovery and their departure to England , she follows the family.

In the meantime the O'Connells have arrived back in London , where Evelyn Rick tells the story of the Scorpion King and his resting place: The Scorpion King is said to wake up every 5000 years and bring death and destruction to the earth. But whoever defeats him receives supreme command of his almost invincible army. The pyramid in the heart of the oasis in which the Scorpio King resides is said to be made of pure gold . Ramses IV , Alexander the Great , Julius Caesar, and Napoleon sent expeditions to her, none of which ever returned. At the same time, Alex opens the ancient Egyptian box with the bracelet and puts it on. The bracelet closes automatically and Alex has visions of the pyramids of Giza and the Karnak temple . When he tries to take the bracelet off again, he doesn't succeed. So he puts a worthless sculpture in the box from which he took the bracelet and closes it again.

Meela and Lock-Nah then enter the property to steal the bracelet. A fight ensues, which the O'Connells win, but the mercenaries kidnap Evelyn. Rick and his brother-in-law Jonathan are late, but meet Ardeth Bay again, who is by their side from now on. Alex then presents the gentlemen with the bracelet he is still wearing and leads the adventurers on the trail of Hafez , the curator of the British Museum . However, Rick's offspring must learn that putting on the circlet has conjured up the next apocalypse .

In the basement of the museum, Rick and Ardeth witness how Hafez Imhotep is resurrected in a ritual in the presence of Lock-Nah, while Jonathan and Alex guard the car in front of the museum. The plan of the wicked becomes obvious: They want to kill the Scorpion King through the immortal high priest and let him take over the army of Anubis. At the same time Evelyn is to be sacrificed to him. Rick can free Evelyn and defeat Imhotep's undead minions together with Ardeth Bay during a chase in a double-decker bus through the night capital. But then Alex is kidnapped by Lock-Nah's troops, as they had found out that the boy is wearing the much-needed bracelet on his wrist.

A race against time begins for the rescue team led by Rick, as they first have to bring Alex back and second, they have to be in the oasis of Ahm Shere before the villains around Imhotep in order to thwart the high priest's plan. While Imhotep regains his fleshly form ritually, Anck-Su-Namun is resurrected in Meela Nais' body and, with the help of Alex, gets closer to his goal, Rick wants to harness his old buddy Izzy . He owns a fast airship , but is horrified at the sight of Rick, as it reminds him of painful old times. Only the golden scepter, which Jonathan is carrying around as a souvenir, makes Izzy rethink, and the group sets off into the air and up the Nile towards the mysterious oasis. Ardeth Bay says goodbye to form a powerful army from the total of the twelve Medjai tribes.

During the journey in the airship Evelyn has visions again, this time more concrete: Evy is the reincarnation of Princess Nefertiri , the daughter of Pharaoh Sethos I , and at the same time protector of the bracelet. Ankh-Su-Namun is a thorn in her side because she suspects her prospective stepmother's affair with Imhotep. Shortly afterwards, when she observes the events (from the previous film The Mummy ) surrounding the murder of her father, it is she who sends the Medjai to the rescue. Rick learns that a tattoo on his right forearm, which he received in an Egyptian orphanage, identifies him as a "warrior of God".

Despite the huge wave that Imhotep conjures up with the Nile and which almost crashes the airship, O'Connell's group arrives at the oasis at the same time as the high priest. Here the secret of the lost armies of various military commanders from history is revealed : the oasis is inhabited by murderous pygmies who immediately decimate Lock-Nah's mercenaries. At the same time, Rick, Evy and Jonathan start a counterstrike and free Alex - also with the help of the returned Ardeth Bay, who switches off Lock-Nah. The pygmies are shaken off, and at the last moment Rick manages to bring Alex to the pyramid with the bracelet - which would have killed him if it had failed.

Then the opponents appear and Anck-Su-Namun stabs Evelyn while Imhotep enters the pyramid. When he crosses a seal, his magical powers are taken from him and he has to face the Scorpio King as a mortal one. Hafez has since reactivated the Anubis army, which then engages in a bitter battle with the Medjai led by Ardeth. Alex and Jonathan use the book to revive Evelyn, who Anck-Su-Namun keeps in check with a knife fight. Rick disturbs Imhotep during his ritual and engages in a fight with the high priest, in the course of which Mathayus wakes up: The Scorpion King has mutated into a monster of the same name and attacks the fighting.

During the fight, Rick discovers from wall reliefs that Jonathan's golden staff is the scepter of Osiris , which, when converted into a spear, can kill the Scorpio King. At the last moment, Rick can snatch the spear from Imhotep and kill the Scorpion King, who then dissolves in black sand - as does the army of Anubis. However, this sets in motion the self-destruction of the pyramid and thus the entire oasis. Evelyn rescues Rick from falling into hell, while Imhotep has to sadly realize that Anck-Su-Namun is not ready for such an act. He nods sadly to Rick and Evelyn with a sad smile and finally throws himself heartbroken into hell. Anck-Su-Namun dies falling into a pool full of poisonous scorpions.

The oasis sinks quickly into the desert sand, and at the last moment Rick, Evelyn, Jonathan and Alex are rescued by Izzy in his airship. Jonathan even manages to pull the huge diamond off the top of the pyramid, with which the adventure comes to a pleasant end for him too.

criticism

"It's amazing that with all the time and money invested in the effects of the film, the result is as kitschy as an old Hercules film from Italy."

- Steven Rosen, Denver Post

"Bigger, faster, louder, more."

- Scott Weinberg, eFilmCritic.com

"Continuation of the successful film" Die Mumie "(1999), dramaturgically in the style of a B-movie, technically up to date with computer-animated effects. A fast-paced cinematic ghost train ride that is only interested in the extremely attractive external pace. "

Trivia

  • The film was shot in Morocco , Jordan , Great Britain and the Shepperton Studios there . The University College London served as the front of the British Museum and an open pit near London for the Hamunaptra archaeological site . For the bus hunt, Tower Bridge was closed to traffic for the first time - but only for a few minutes because of the traffic jam. The O'Connell mansion was the same property that was featured in The Omen .
  • Scorpion King Starring Dwayne Johnson was until 2006 wrestler of WWE . As Rocky Maivia or The Rock , he held the WWE Championship seven times before retiring from wrestling. The mummy returns was the beginning of his acting career. Since 2011 Johnson has been appearing at WWE wrestling events again and again and has since held the WWE Championship one more time.
  • In order to live up to his role as priest Imhotep , actor Arnold Vosloo had to shave twice a day.
  • Brendan Fraser broke a rib while filming, compressed his spine and injured his knees. Dwayne Johnson suffered from sunburn and upset stomach.
  • Alex brings down the temple columns in the same domino-like manner as Evelyn brings down the bookshelves in the first part. Likewise, the running gag about the illegible hieroglyph from the “Book of the Dead” appears again in the translation of an Egyptian saying.
  • The handprints on the bathroom walls on the train are from director Sommers. He also has a guest appearance in the film: He's the one sitting in the bathtub with Izzy.
  • When Imhotep's awakened mummies chase the O'Connell group through London, there are initially four, but only three during the attacks on the bus. According to director Sommers, the fourth should attack Alex as soon as the bus stopped. The scene was removed from the script at the direction of the director and for the sake of clarity. The same thing happened with the fight in the O'Connell house, which was supposed to take place in a casino operated by Jonathan . The O'Connells were also supposed to live in a large apartment.
  • A life-size Oscar statue can be seen in the background in a treasure chamber filled with gold .
  • Rachel Weisz's vision character Nefertiri was originally supposed to be called Nefertiti . However, since they feared inappropriate laughs and puns because of the name, it was finally changed. Nefertiti is the English pronunciation for Nefertiti .
  • The name of Rick's airship pilot was derived from the director's dog, who is also called Izzy .
  • The sun, or the light it casts, falls the wrong way into Ahm-Shere. It rises in the east of the "cauldron" of the oasis, where the rays also begin. This enables O'Connel and his son to race.
  • The title of the film cannot be seen in the opening credits. You can only read it at the end with the credits . : Uncredited also the theme song for the film runs Forever May Not Be Long Enough of Live .
  • The original FSK-16 version differs in the fight between the two women by 0.16 seconds from the FSK-12 version.
  • The film grossed $ 433,013,274 at a cost of $ 98,000,000, surpassing its predecessor.
  • The weapons Evelyn and Anck-Su-Namun use during their fights are called sai forks (or just referred to as sai ). There were no sai forks in ancient Egypt any more than duels between the Pharaoh's bride and a princess were common. Sai forks are originally from Okinawa and were close combat weapons. The director said that he liked the gun and allowed himself artistic freedom.
  • The army of Anubis, the exterior view of the temple complex as well as Cairo and large parts of London were animated on the computer. The Scorpion King was also created digitally. So only the facial features of Dwayne Johnson were transferred to the figure.
  • The Mummy Returns was also released as a video game on the Playstation 2 and Game Boy Color in2001. In the game, however, the end is open: the player can choose between Rick and Imhotep as characters. If you win the game as Rick, the end of the film appears. However, if you win the game as Imhotep, Imhotep gains control of the Scorpion King's army and conquers the world.
