The Stars and Stripes is a newspaper and internet publication published for the forces of the United States Armed Forces .

History and mission

It appears as a European edition ( European Edition ), Middle East edition ( Mideast Edition ) and Pacific edition ( Pacific Edition ); Publishing place is Washington, DC Editor is currently Max D. Lederer, Jr. The history of the newspaper dates back to 1861 when the 11th, 18th, and 29th Illinois Regiments in Bloomfield, Missouri used the newspaper for internal purposes during the American Civil War hung up.

The European headquarters of the magazine has been based in Kaiserslautern since 2008 . The editorial office in Kaiserslautern is responsible for the European and Middle East editions. The circulation for Germany is 15,000 copies. After the Second World War , it first established itself in 1945 in Pfungstadt, Hesse. At that time it had a total print run of 600,000 pieces. In 1949 the company moved to the Stars & Stripes Compound. This was in the immediate vicinity of August Euler Airport . The European headquarters of the American army newspaper was housed there in a former air barracks (previously, from 1919, Caserne Garnier du Plessis) of the Darmstadt aviation station.

In addition to the printed version for military personnel, the newspaper is also made available online for everyone. A "Stars and Stripes" app is also available for the smartphone.

The Downrange comic series appears in the newspaper .
