history
The beginnings
The Friedrichsbad, donated by the entrepreneur and founder of the foundation Margarethe Krupp , was built in two years on Kerkhoffstrasse in the Frohnhausen district and handed over to the city and thus to the public on July 1, 1912. As a bathing establishment , it primarily served the general hygiene of the residents, as a bathroom in the apartment was rare at that time. In order to be able to offer as many people as possible a bathing opportunity, the time for a bath was limited to twenty minutes. Later the bath became increasingly important for swimming. This gave the swimming club Essen West 1908 , which was founded in 1908 in a restaurant called Frohnhauser Ende , today's SC Aegir Essen 1908 e. V. , new opportunities for swimming lessons. On March 29, 1914, the first major competition was held here, for which the Krupp family donated a silver cup as an honorary challenge award , which until 1937 honored the best German swimmers within the German Swimming Association .
After the First World War
During the First World War , the bath had to be closed in 1915 because a large number of the club's members had been drafted. In 1919 the bathroom could be used again. In honor of several fallen members, a memorial plaque was ceremoniously unveiled in the reception hall of the Friedrichsbad on September 17, 1922. Due to the high level of unemployment in the district and the difficult political situation in the 1930s, it was not until 1937, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary, that a large swimming festival was held again.
After the Second World War
After the Second World War , the bathroom, which had been badly damaged by three bombs, was rebuilt in a different way. The pool, which was originally only 23.48 meters long, was expanded to a competitive 25 meters with four lanes. The reopening took place on July 23, 1949 under the leadership of SC Aegir Essen 1908 e. V. instead.
In 1969 the city of Essen had the bathroom modernized within two years. As a result of better equipped apartments in the area, the bath and shower wing as well as the spa were closed in 1982/1983.
Swimming pool today
After renovation in 1985 by the Stadtsportbund, an approximately 1000 square meter training area including three gymnastics halls, fitness studio and sauna is available next to the pool. There are currently around 200 courses on offer, which are used by around 2000 citizens. The offer ranges from baby swimming courses and baby gymnastics to school sports and preventive health measures. The regular opening times for public swimming are limited due to the courses.
The bath belongs to the sports and bathing companies of the city of Essen. In the early 1980s, the city of Essen decided to end the city subsidies for the bathroom. As a result, the Essener Sportbund e. V. developed a concept to convert the bathroom into a sports and health center and to run it on its own. The Sportbund was the owner of the renovation. Since 1985 the Friedrichsbad has been part of the Essener Sportbund e. V., who is responsible for the orderly operations within the framework of an operating management company. On September 19, 1987, the SGZ Friedrichsbad sports and health center opened. Today the city grants a municipal subsidy to the running costs.
