The Bergheim water tower is a water tower in Duisburg - Bergheim in the Rheinhausen district . It was built in 1908 as a storage tower for the Hochemmerich waterworks under the direction of Josef Hansen and shut down in 1996.

history

At the start of construction, the water tower was designed for a rapidly growing settlement, which has proven itself with the population growth in the city of Rheinhausen due to the industrialization of the Ruhr area .

The 50-meter high tower rises at the highest point in the area, 36 meters above sea level. The standardized spherical container from Klönne with a diameter of 9.20 meters and a capacity of more than 3000 cubic meters rests on supports in the head. Below that is a tower 12 meters wide on the ground and around 6 meters wide at the height of the trailer ring. The ground floor is designed as a plinth in ashlar masonry, the seven-storey tower as brick masonry with decorations and windows of different heights and sizes. Inside is the stairwell, through the sphere a tube with ladder rungs leads to the lantern.

The pump house, a round building 7.5 meters in diameter and 7.5 meters in height, also belongs to the waterworks. The plastered brick building in historicizing form with a crenellated balustrade contains a well shaft. Two pumps at 60 m³ / h used to convey the water into the tower tank. After the extraction reserves were exhausted in 1996, the pumps were shut down.

The water tower and pump house have been a listed building since 1990 . There is a water protection area around the water tower .

In the winter months from St. Martin's Day to around the Christmas holidays, the tower is illuminated green at night.

The Rheinhausen Mining Collection Association is located opposite . In the immediate vicinity are the Grashof and the Bergheimer Windmühle, both of which are also listed buildings.
