The Dortmund-Deusen sewage treatment plant is the first sewage treatment plant on the Emscher to be built as part of the conversion of the Emscher system . The operator is the Emschergenossenschaft .

Until 1994, the wastewater from downtown Dortmund and the northern part of the city flowed untreated into the Emscher. In addition, the wastewater from the Dortmund breweries and Hoesch AG came at this time . The catchment area of the sewage treatment plant is 4,620 hectares.

The system, equipped with two silver digestion towers that can be seen from afar, was completed in 1994 and purifies the water of 140,000 residents. The capacity of the sewage treatment plant corresponds to 485,000 population equivalents . This clearly shows that around three quarters of industrial wastewater is treated.

With the commissioning of this sewage treatment plant, it was primarily the brewery company's wastewater that could be disposed of. Due to their putrefactive products, on the long way to the Emschermuende sewage treatment plant, these had repeatedly led to odor nuisance from hydrogen sulfide.

The Deusen sewage treatment plant is part of the route of industrial culture . The two digestion towers are illuminated in green in the evening.
