The Emscher passage businesslike, but wrong, colloquially Emscher culvert called, is a passage of the Emscher under the Rhine-Herne Canal , a grade- stream crossing in Castrop-Rauxel district Henrichenburg near the former Henrichenburg at Channel kilometers 42.605. The structure is the largest of its kind in the Emscher area.

First Emscher passage

When the branch canal of the Dortmund-Ems canal to Herne was built towards the end of the 1890s, a culvert structure was built. This was blown up during the occupation of the Ruhr in April 1923 in order to sabotage the removal of coal, and afterwards only makeshift repairs were made. Later a parallel canal was built.

Second Emscher passage

In the course of this " second trip " the passage was rebuilt until 1929. The " old trip " was separated from the canal in the course of the dismantling of the first structure and has been used for leisure and sport ever since. As early as 1993, the Federal Institute for Hydraulic Engineering determined that the second culvert was in poor structural condition.

The three reinforced concrete tubes of the Emscher pass had a diameter of 5.34 meters each with a wall thickness of 85 centimeters. The design flood discharge to be conducted was 180 m³ / s.

Construction status April 2010 - the third Emscher passage in the excavation pit, northern (left) and middle wall can already be seen. The southern wall is in preparation, the cover is still completely missing. The sewer is located behind the sheet pile wall.

Third Emscher passage

As the state of construction deteriorated further in the following years and the channel of the canal was to be widened continuously from 30 meters to 55 meters and deepened to four meters, a third structure was started in 2008, 200 meters north. The new Emscher passage was first created in a dry dock-like excavation west of the canal in the route of the future Emscher course. After sealing the inlet and outlet sides, the construction pit was flooded, the passage floated like a ship and could be floated into the canal after removing the canal-side sheet pile wall and creating the foundation. During the subsequent flooding of the structure, it sank to the intended place. After the new canal embankments had been built , the inlet and outlet structures could be completed. The new building was put into operation on June 14, 2012.

The previous building was blown up on November 4, 2012. At the same time, a nature adventure park is to be created in this area as part of the conversion of the Emscher system.
