The Green Path is an approximately ten kilometer long, combined cycle and hiking trail on the Emschertal Railway, built between 1872 and 1878 by the Cologne-Minden Railway Company, between Oberhausen - Sterkrade and Duisburg - Ruhrort . It is part of the Emscher Park cycle path .
The Green Path uses the route of the Sterkrade - Neumühl - Meiderich-Nord section of the Emschertal Railway, built in 1875 , on which freight traffic between the collieries , coking plants , power plants and smelters in the Emscher region and the Duisburg-Ruhrorter coal handling ports was handled until it was closed in 1987 .
Between 1996 and 2007, the railway line was converted into a cycle and hiking trail in three sections for 10.4 million euros. Old shunting tracks and tracks of the track harp were preserved as well as signal signs and hectometer stones . Bridges were built or renewed over the Emscher and Kleine Emscher . The path leads through the Duisburg-Nord landscape park and connects to the HOAG route in Oberhausen.
