The Emscher Park Cycle Path is a long- distance cycle path in the heart of the Ruhr area . It is geographically based on the Emschertal and extends in an east-west direction between Duisburg and Dortmund .

The northern part runs close to the Rhine-Herne Canal (and thus also close to the eponymous Emscher River ) and the Datteln-Hamm Canal , while the southern part - roughly divided - runs between the two canals and the Ruhr , the distance between the two Dividing is 10 to 25 kilometers. The 225-kilometer circular route (with a detour from Bergkamen to Hamm) is one of the two main routes of the Route of Industrial Culture by Bike project , while the second main route, the Ruhrgebiet circular route, runs more in the outer areas of the Ruhr area. Both cycle paths are connected with and with each other by numbered R-paths, mostly running in north-south direction , so that tours with completely different lengths can be ridden.

With the “Emscher Park Cycle Path”, the Ruhr Regional Association would like to make the Ruhr area with its excursion destinations and sights accessible by bike . The cycle path leads along canals, river banks and roads with little traffic to many points on the route of industrial heritage , around 80% of the route is paved. It runs in the urban areas of Bergkamen, Bochum, Bottrop, Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Hamm, Herne, Kamen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Lünen, Oberhausen, Recklinghausen and Waltrop.

To make the project a success, the Ruhr Regional Association has built up an entire infrastructure of rental stations for bicycles, which are mostly located in central locations such as main train stations in cities in the Ruhr area or major excursion destinations such as the Zollverein colliery. The so-called "RevierRäder" can be rented here. A main idea when setting up the bike stations is to enable interested tourists easy access to the Ruhr area by bike.

The waymarks of the Emscher Park cycle path show a mining tower above an indicated landscape. In the lower half is the lettering "route industriekultur" with the logo of the RVR, above the tower is the name of the cycle path. The signs of the other cycle paths on the Route of Industrial Culture are designed in the same way, they only differ in color.

Note

The "Emscher Park cycle track" should not with the similar-sounding Emscher way of Emschergenossenschaft be confused. Both cycle paths often run on the same roads or intersect there, especially along the Emscher.
