HOAG route
The HOAG route is a freight route between the cities of Duisburg and Oberhausen that has been converted into a cycle path .
The railway line of the former Hüttenwerke Oberhausen Aktien Gesellschaft (HOAG) connects the Duisburg district of Walsum with Oberhausen Sterkrade . The HOAG route originally served to transport coal from the Sterkrade colliery to the Rhine port in Walsum.
After a five-year construction period (removal of the track, asphalting, etc.) by the Ruhr Regional Association , the combined cycle and hiking trail was opened to the public in May 2007. Oversized, approximately 1.50 meter high colored play figures serve as signposts for the cycle path.
The 7 million euro project was 90 percent financed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Münster district government as part of the Emscher-Lippe ecology program. Another ten percent were own funds of the regional association Ruhr.
