Stemmersberg settlement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stemmersberg settlement is a former miners' settlement in Oberhausen - Osterfeld .

Construction of the settlement

Construction work on the Stemmersberg.

The settlement was essentially built between 1900 and 1906 by Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH). The street names of the settlement can be made up of: Gute Hope Hut Aktien Verein. The sinking of the Osterfeld , Vondern , Sterkrade and Hugo collieries in the last quarter of the 19th century led to the influx of large numbers of workers into the Oberhausen area, which the GHH required to house a total of 14 new factory settlements with 478 houses and 1,732 apartments between 1898 and 1912 erected. The Stemmersberg settlement, which was created in the former municipality of Osterfeld , is one of the largest of its kind with almost 100 houses. It mainly consists of one and a half-story clinker brick buildings with the cross-shaped floor plan that was widespread in workers' settlements at the time. This includes four apartments each with a separate entrance. Only the houses in the last phase of construction have larger living areas, different floor plans and are more based on the varied architecture of garden settlements. The toddler school, which was later added to the estate, based on plans by Bruno Möhring , is an architectural peculiarity .

Redevelopment and renovation

After the Second World War , the GHH lost its dominant role as an employer in Oberhausen. The houses on Stemmersberg were temporarily owned by Thyssen AG , which they sold in 1996 to the state development company NRW .

After purchasing the estate, LEG began extensive renovation and modernization of the houses. Among other things, there was a renewal of the roofs, the installation of new windows, an extensive renewal of all installations and the installation of gas floor heating. In some cases, the floor plans were changed and larger apartments were created. By the end of the modernization measure in 2002, LEG had invested over 39 million euros in the project. The modernization of the living environment (courtyard areas, outbuildings, stables and paths) was largely carried out by the residents themselves. For this purpose, the Stemmersberger eV was founded in 1997 , which successfully sought funding within the framework of the IBA Emscherpark . The measures, which also included a rainwater infiltration system, were about half carried out in-house and the other half financed by subsidies. In the long term, the association wanted to acquire the settlement as a residents' cooperative from LEG and offset part of the purchase price from its own work. After the insolvency of the association in the final phase of modernization, the economic basis for this step has moved a long way off.

The now listed settlement is now part of the Route of Industrial Culture .
