The Knappenhalde

The Knappenviertel is a district of the Oberhausen district of Alt-Oberhausen ; it has about 7000 inhabitants and covers an area of about 125  hectares . The Knappenviertel is bordered in the south by Falkensteinstrasse, in the west by Liebknechtstrasse and the street "Am Damm", in the north by Essener Strasse and in the east by Mellinghofer Strasse. In the north of the district is the Knappenhalde , the highest point in Oberhausen's urban area.

history

Entrance building of the former Oberhausen colliery

Originally the Knappenviertel was a heather landscape , interspersed with individual farms. There was modest farming with sheep and beekeeping here . With the construction of the Cologne-Mindener Railway in the middle of the 19th century and advancing industrialization, the landscape changed. The Knappenviertel is part of the Oberhausen-Ost regional unit, which was formed from 1862 to 1915. During this time, industrial events such as the sinking of the Oberhausen colliery or the settlement of the later Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH) shaped the growth of the district, which was particularly driven by the construction of company housing. In the post-war period, parts of the old factory settlements were replaced by new buildings (two- to four-storey row and block perimeter buildings, isolated high-rise buildings), so that the inconsistent settlement structure that prevails today emerged.

Infrastructure

"Alte Heid" bunker

The Knappenviertel is first and foremost a residential area that has a new location thanks to its proximity to the CentrO leisure and shopping park in the "New Center" . In March 1996, the Oberhausen miners' quarter was included in the state program “Districts with special needs for renovation”. Between 1996 and 2002 over 200 individual measures and projects were implemented, which were coordinated by the local district office . In 2001, the Oberhausen Bunker Museum was opened in the Knappenviertel . In the bunker from the Second World War, there are exhibition rooms that have been left as they were found. With historical exhibitions and artistic installations, the bunker museum is particularly dedicated to the history of the aerial warfare and the construction of the bunker, because the Ruhr area in particular was a main target at the time because of its armaments industry.

The Knappenviertel is about 2.5 km from Oberhausen main station . The district is connected to the local transport network with the bus lines SB93, SB94, 143, 953 and 958 of the Rhein-Ruhr transport association.
