The Rünthe express train settlement is the first of three colliery settlements that were built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries on the area of the old Haus Rünthe estate - today a district of Bergkamen  .

The settlement was planned by the owners of the Werne colliery , who did not receive a building permit for a miners' colony in the neighboring town. The name of the settlement, with its eleven houses lined up on Schachtstrasse, comes from the vernacular and refers to the strict, uniform facade structure . Each house is planned for four families, whose apartments each have their own house entrances and are spread over two floors. Most of the buildings in the estate - apart from the installation of modern windows - still largely have the original facade design.
