It documents the history of Waltrop , with a focus on agriculture, handicrafts, religion and, in the area of industry, especially mining. With the Zeche Waltrop and a shaft of the Zeche Ickern there were two mines in Waltrop. In addition, there are natural history, mineral and rock collections, as well as an archive with documents and writings from the parish archive, and a long-term photo collection of the Waltrop townscape. In its own workshop, the exhibits are prepared by the local history association . Since 2007, events for school classes or celebrations for up to 50 people have been held in a larger room.

The museum is open every Thursday and two Sundays a month and admission is free. The members of the Heimatverein offer various thematic tours and picture presentations. Once a year there is a museum festival, in 2010 the 75th anniversary of the Heimatverein was celebrated with a big festival.

Riphaushof

The Riphaushof had been owned by the Riphaus family for centuries, the current house dates from 1904. The Waltrop community bought the building in 1912, and after the Second World War they housed the municipal building yard here. After an interim use by a company, the city acquired the property back in 1992 and made it available to the local history association in 1994 for the redesign of the museum. Previously, parts of the museum material were already stored in the municipal building yard, other parts were exhibited in various schools. The move to its own building was necessary because the existing premises were constantly required for schools, retirement homes or other purposes. The expansion and the establishment of the Riphaushof was carried out with the own funds of the Heimatverein, the citizens of Waltrop and donations of 30,000 DM. The expansion in 2007 was again financed with own funds amounting to 40,000 euros.

Hometown club

From around 1925, the then bailiff, Alfred Brockhausen, called on people to collect local history material, and citizens of the community had the idea of founding an association. On June 18, 1935, the “Association for Local and Local History for the District of Waltrop” was founded. The association, which is recognized as a non-profit organization, promotes all branches of homeland care , local history , local culture, dialect and customs according to its statutes . This also includes the voluntary management of the local history museum and the archive.
