Gersteinwerk |
The Gersteinwerk is a combined steam power plant ( natural gas ) owned by RWE AG in the Werner district of Stockum an der Lippe . The power plant has a net electrical output of 1397 megawatts and has a 282 meter high chimney. The work belongs to various themed routes on the Route of Industrial Culture .
designation
The Gersteinwerk is named after the Bochum District Administrator Karl Gerstein , who u. a. was a determined opponent of the advance of the RWE into Westphalia.
development
It was built between 1913 and 1917 by the later VEW . At that time, the fuel (hard coal) was supplied by the surrounding mines . The last of these old blocks were demolished in 1991/1992. The four new natural gas power plant blocks were put into operation between 1970 and 1973, followed in 1984 by the combination power plant block (Block K) for the combustion of hard coal. Most of the coal is delivered by ship to its own port on the Datteln-Hamm Canal . The port is on the other side of the Lippe in the area of the city of Hamm ; From there, the coal is transported over the river to the coal storage facility of the power plant using a conveyor belt . Another part of the coal is delivered directly to the power station on the Werne – Bockum-Höveler railway .
In Block H, only the gas turbine is operated (solo operation), which means that this block only has a net output of 55 MW.
Due to the market situation at the time, Block I was shut down on April 1, 2012 and permanently preserved.
On August 14, 2014, RWE announced that it would cease operation of the coal-fired part of Unit K (620 MW) in the first quarter of 2017. In 2015 it was announced that the shutdown date had been postponed to 2019.
The coal-fired part of Block K was taken offline on March 29, 2019 and finally shut down.
Capacity reserve
In February 2020, the natural gas units F1 , F2 , G1 and G2 were awarded a contract for 680 megawatts in the capacity reserve tender of the transmission system operators . The reserve power must be provided from October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2022. During this time, the blocks are not allowed to participate in the electricity market. In return, RWE as the operator receives 68,000 euros per year and MW for keeping the reserve.
power
The natural gas combination blocks F, G, H and I each deliver a gross output of 427 MW (net output 410 MW) and are now used as a reserve to cover peak loads . A special feature is the combination process in which a gas turbine is connected upstream of the steam generator : The approximately 430 ° C hot exhaust gases from the gas turbine with a volume fraction of around 17% residual oxygen flow into a downstream conventional steam generator to burn natural gas. The heat from the combustion air supplied to the boiler by the gas turbine is also used as useful heat in the steam generator. The process achieves an efficiency of 42%. This technology was promoted by Klaus Knizia (CEO of VEW AG from 1975 to 1992) and implemented from 1972 to 1974 in the Gersteinwerk and Emsland power plants .
In 1984, Block K with 791 MW gross electrical output (112 MW gas turbine, 679 MW steam turbine) was put into operation; After deducting internal requirements, 732 MW (net) are available to the network. This world's largest gas-hard coal combination block has a circuit comparable to that of the natural gas combination blocks; here, however, the actual steam generator is fired with hard coal. Electricity generated from hard coal generally covers base and medium loads, but in combination with the gas turbine it is even more suitable for medium loads and even for peak loads. The hard coal block was shut down in March 2019.
