The Öko-Zentrum NRW is a specialist in sustainable building. The 30-strong team consists mainly of architects, civil engineers or building physicists. It offers further training, advice and engineering services for ecological construction, renovation and modernization for companies and builders.

The Eco-Center NRW is located in an ecologically oriented business park on the site of the former Sachsen colliery in Hamm- Heessen . The administrative seat of the eco-center is the Crusemannsche Hof , which was relocated in the 1970s . It had to give way to the Westfalen power plant and was rebuilt true to the original on the edge of the colliery area.

In 1976, the Sachsen colliery was closed and the shafts then filled . From 1987 the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Hamm planned the new use of the site as a center for biological and ecological planning and building, in 1991 the project was included in the IBA Emscherpark , and in 1993 the eco-center was officially opened. A contact and information point, an event location for trade fairs and congresses and a training center for education and training were planned as areas of activity.

It also marketed the “GewerbePARK Sachsen” (50 hectares of fallow land on the former colliery site), of which, however, 30 hectares remained green (hence the spelling). This not only preserved a local recreation area for the surrounding residential development, it also forms a new type of commercial space concept designed by the State Development Corporation of North Rhine-Westphalia : “Working in the Park”. Several companies with a focus on ecological construction and renovation have already settled in the business park.
