The Barmer holiday colony was a recreation center for Elberfeld and Barmer workers' children at the end of the 19th century in Unna - Königsborn .

history

The high level of industrialization in Wuppertal in the 19th century was accompanied by sometimes miserable living conditions for the workers. As a result, charitable associations were formed in the upper middle class, dedicated to caring for the poor and alleviating the harsh living conditions. A charitable committee took care of the health care of the Elberfeld and Barmer workers' children, who often suffered from diseases such as tuberculosis , rickets or rheumatism .

For the first time in 1880 children were sent to Königsborn, where they took part in a free convalescent cure in a holiday colony affiliated with the spa there .

The facility was quickly expanded after its clear success and now took in children from other metropolitan areas. A children's hospital was built in 1882. When the Königsborn saltworks was closed, the spa business of the Barmer holiday colony also came to an end in its previous form. The Königsborn children's sanatorium, which specializes in lung diseases such as tuberculosis, continued to operate.

In the 1950s, part of the hospital was demolished to make way for a new clinic.

Königsborn life center

As the Königsborn Life Center (since 2000), the Specialist Clinic for Neuro and Social Pediatrics and the Social Pediatric Center take care of children and adolescents with developmental disorders , epilepsy , spasticity and multiple disabilities. Affiliated is the Lebensarche residential facility for severely disabled children and young people.

In addition, the Königsborn house was set up as a model facility for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for the care of severely disabled adults (54 places) (people in a vegetative state and phases of regression). In the years that followed, other facilities were developed to complement the Königsborn Children's Clinic.
