Hermann settlement

The Hermann settlement is a colliery settlement that was built at the beginning of the 20th century for the miners of the Hermann colliery in Beifang near Selm .

history

From 1909 to 1923, the mining company Hermann mb H. had the Dortmund architects D. & K. Schulze create the "Alte Kolonie" factory estate for immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. The later Hermann settlement with 514 houses was arranged in concentric rings around the nearby medieval Botzlar castle . Based on the concepts of the garden city , the consistently high-quality, variedly designed development with 47 house types consisting of 1½-storey single-family and semi-detached houses was interspersed with plenty of green and garden areas. The construction costs of a house were about 4,000 marks; it had three to four rooms with up to 70 square meters of living space, an approximately 3 meter wide front garden and a back garden plot of approximately 600 square meters with stables.

The closure of the Hermann colliery in 1926 led to considerable social problems for decades.

From 1963 the owner, Gebrüder Stumm GmbH, privatized the settlement. In this context, the municipality planned the large-scale renovation of the Selm-Beifang center; typical of the time, extensive demolitions were planned, which should be enforced with funds from building law despite inadequate funding. In 1966, those affected joined together to form a community of interests and subsequently achieved a planning task.

In more recent times, the settlement and the colliery have been part of the route of industrial culture .
