history

Stadtwerke (general)

On February 3, 1858, the city's first modern utility company, the public limited company for gas lighting, began its work. It represents the immediate predecessor of the Stadtwerke, which was only founded in 1977 in its current form, which is still responsible for the gas supply to the city of Hamm. On October 29, 1858, the stock corporation was able to put the gas works into operation, which was initially only responsible for supplying the street lighting. On March 3, 1887, the city of Hamm took over the plant.

The Ruhr water pipeline to Hamm was completed on March 3, 1887. This enabled the waterworks in Wimbern / Ruhr to go into operation. As a result, the gas and water supplies were merged to form the municipal gas and water works. In 1936, the Stadtwerke took over the Warmen / Ruhr waterworks.

On October 19, 1898, the first tram line went into operation; it opened a day later, on October 20, 1898. At the same time, the citizens began to be supplied with electricity. On April 1, 1907, Hamm acquired the power supply and tram for 1,600,000 Reichsmarks and from then on operated both on its own account. In June 1909, an electricity supply contract was signed with the Radbod colliery . In 1942, the power station of the Sachsen colliery was also included in the power supply. On October 1, 1968, Stadtwerke Hamm took over the power supply in Berge, Westtünnen and parts of Wiescherhöfen from VEW.

The Stadtbad was opened in 1913 (October 14). During the Second World War , the swimming pool was stopped, but the swimming pool was reopened on October 15, 1956.

Aerial port

The Hamm city harbor has been in operation since August 1, 1914 .

Fernwärmeversorgung Heessen GmbH began supplying district heating in Heessen on November 27, 1967.

As part of the second municipal reorganization of Hamm in 1975, the Hamm and Heessen municipal utilities and the Pelkum-Herringen municipal electricity plant were merged to form the Hamm municipal utilities. On January 1, 1977, the company was transformed into what is now Stadtwerke Hamm GmbH with subsidiaries. Also in 1977 the coking plant supply of the city of Hamm was switched to natural gas. On January 1, 1978, the Stadtwerke took over the gas supply in Bockum-Hövel.

Stadtwerkebus

On October 28, 1983, the 125th anniversary of Stadtwerke Hamm (local public transport in Hamm) was celebrated.

Since April 1, 1985, Stadtwerke has owned the water supply network in Hamm, which previously belonged to Gelsenwasser AG. On April 1, 1992, the combined heat and power plants in Heessen and Hamm-Mitte were put into operation. On January 1, 1995, the Stadtwerke also took over the power grids from VEW in Hamm. The four municipal indoor pools and the seven municipal outdoor pools were incorporated into Fernwärmeversorgung Hamm GmbH. In the run-up to the opening of the Maximare sports and health pool on November 14, 2003, some of these pools were closed. On December 28, 2005 Fernwärmeversorgung Hamm GmbH took over the shares in Erlebnistherme Bad Hamm GmbH.

With the establishment of Hamcom GmbH Telekommunikation on November 28, 1996, Stadtwerke Hamm entered the telecommunications age.

In May 2005 the municipal utilities took part in the Trianel Power Kraftwerk Hamm-Uentrop GmbH & Co. KG. On August 17th of the same year, the public utilities association Hellweg-Lippe Netz GmbH & Co. KG (SHL) and the public utility association Hellweg-Lippe Service GmbH (SHL Service) were founded. The groundbreaking ceremony for the gas and steam turbine power plant in Schmehausen took place on September 1, 2005 . The power plant itself went into operation on October 26, 2007. The articles of association of the power plant company Steinkohledoppelblock Westfalen GmbH & Co. KG were signed on February 19, 2008 for the hard coal double block power plant, which is also being built in Schmehausen. The foundation stone was laid on August 29, 2008.

Gas supply

Photo of the old gasometer before 1904

When, on June 4, 1805, a luminaire powered by coal gas provided light for the first time in London's James Park, this initiated the triumph of gas lighting. Two branches of industry in particular benefited from this: coke production and gas production. As a result, numerous gas works were built in the first half of the nineteenth century. The Westfälische Anzeiger reported on January 31, 1857:

"The overall inadequate lighting of our city by oil lanterns and the gas lighting systems that have recently emerged in several cities in the immediate vicinity have stimulated the desire among many residents of our city to see such a system come to life here too."

Until the middle of the nineteenth century, technical progress and economic development led to an unexpected boom. For example, between 1847 and 1850, the railway lines over Hamm went into operation. The Lippe Shipping also gave the new railway junction a strong attraction, so that a strong wire industry could be established in Hamm. As a result, the lighting in the production facilities, in public facilities, private households and on public transport routes had to be expanded and improved. In 1857 there were already around 10,000 residents in Hamm. The magistrate, administration and influential citizens dealt intensively with the pressing problem of water supply and public lighting and finally, because of the tight budget and for reasons of convenience, preferred gas lighting. The budget at the time would not have allowed the construction of a purely urban gas plant, since the costs would have been around 50,000 richstaler. This sum was five times higher than the total budget of 1857. The public limited company for gas lighting, however, went back to the private initiative of some citizens of Hammer; the city of Hamm was only involved in the stock corporation as the owner of the capital. However, it had secured the right to take over all shares after the twenty-five year term at the latest.

On February 3, 1858, the stock company for gas lighting was founded. A provisional directorate was initially elected , headed by Mayor Jahn. The management also included deserving citizens of the city of Hamm: lawyer Heintzmann, Hofrat Esselen, businessman Bacharach and high school teacher Dr. Hadenkamp. The site on which the old municipal swimming pool was located until 2011, which has since been demolished, served as the location for the gas works. On October 29, 1858, the gas works was finally put into operation. When the first gas lamps lit up in Hamm, this event was duly celebrated in the city. Ninety-five gas lamps were installed in the streets when it opened. Another 700 flames burned in private houses and institutions. The company became a success. In the first year the dividend was already 8%. By 1861 it rose to 9.5%, and by 1864 even to 16%. Hammer Gas stocks had a good reputation and were very popular.

On June 6, 1883, the city of Hamm then took over the gas works so that the stock corporation could be dissolved. In the commercial register at the local court of Hamm (company register no.10) it says:

"The city of Hamm has made use of the right to which it is entitled under Section 2 of the Articles of Association and took over the gas company on February 3rd, so that the stock corporation is dissolved."

Despite the deletion of the stock corporation from the land register, the shareholders received 10% dividend and 10.5% for the seven-month financial year 1883/84, which ran until the city's takeover of the gas company, in accordance with the city council's resolution of November 6, 1883 Super dividend , a total of 36.20 Reichsmarks per share.

Until the end of the 19th century, gas was used almost exclusively for lighting purposes. With the beginning of the twentieth century, however, it increasingly found its way into trade and industry as well as into private households. The delivery quantities increased. In 1883 there were 800,000 m³ of coal gas (corresponds to approx. Four million kilowatt hours), in 1903 8.5 million kWh and in 1922 23.5 million kWh could be sold. In order to be able to cope with the increase in capacity, the operating facilities were relocated to Langewanneweg between 1904 and 1909, where a larger area was available. As early as 1904 a gas tank could be built here, which meant a cost of 124,000 marks, but held 18,000 m³. The new gasworks was designed for an annual output of four million m³ with a daily maximum output of 20,000 m³. The planning at that time was based on a gas consumption of 50 m³ per person per year. The gasworks remained in operation until 1918, after which its own generation was given up.

The triumphant advance of mining made natural gas available in large quantities. The gas extracted from the boreholes in particular by the Radbod colliery was able to completely replace town gas from 1920. Between 1916 and 1918 a cast iron pipeline with a diameter of 150 mm was laid, with the help of which the Radbod coking plant was able to supply the gasworks on Langewanneweg. The gas obtained from the coking plant was temporarily stored in the 18,000 m³ gas tank and passed on to the consumer via a pressure control system. As gas sales continued to rise, a larger gas tank had to be built in 1953/54, this time with a capacity of 50,000 m³.

In 1959, the installation department equipped a radio interference suppression vehicle for the first time so that it could be used immediately. In 1960 there were already over 20,000 gas meters in Hamm. In this year, an electric remote control was also put into operation for the first time, which controlled the pressure waves for igniting and switching off the gas lamps from the central office of the gas works. In order to be able to quickly rectify malfunctions in gas appliances, an in-house customer service was set up in January 1962. In the first year it was used 621 times.

In 1969, the gas pipe network had a total length of around 254 km. The total annual gas supply this year was almost 300 million kWh. The maximum daily consumption, which in 1969 was 1.6 million kWh, rose to 2.2 million kWh in 1972 and then again by almost 500,000 kWh to 2.7 million kWh in 1973. There were thirty-four control stations now in operation, including 19 town gas and 15 industrial regulator systems. In 1974, the state calibration directorate in Cologne issued an operating permit for a gas meter test center; Household gas meters can be checked and authenticated in one of these.

In 1977 coke oven gas was switched to natural gas. The supply area of Stadtwerke Hamm GmbH, which was founded as a municipal company on January 1, was divided into twenty conversion districts. The total costs of the changeover amounted to more than twelve million DM, which however could be recovered quickly due to the subsequent boom. On January 1, 1979, Stadtwerke Hamm took over the gas pipe network in the former town of Bockum-Hövel from VEW. This city district had previously been supplied with coke oven gas, but in 1981 the conversion took place here as well. Since then, the municipal utility has been supplying the entire urban area of Hamm with gas. Since then, natural gas has successfully asserted itself on the market as a heating energy compared to other fuels. In Hamm it already accounts for 65 percent of the heating energy volume. For new builds, 99 out of 100 builders choose natural gas. This is also due to the fact that the natural gas supply is secure because it is based on long-term supply contracts. The main supplier countries are Russia (34%), Norway (23%) and the Netherlands (20%). Approx. 18% are funded in Germany.

Stadtwerke Hamm offer a range of services related to natural gas. These include energy saving advice, the heating service, the billing service and the issuing of energy certificates and thermographic recordings. Stadtwerke Hamm now supplies large parts of Hamm with natural gas. Around 26,100 house connections are connected to the approximately 672 km long natural gas pipelines, with around three hundred new natural gas house connections being recorded every year. Every year the municipal utilities transport a good 1.7 billion kilowatt hours of natural gas to customers in households, trade and industry.

On August 30, 2008, Stadtwerke Hamm celebrated the 150th anniversary of the gas supply. On the occasion of the birthday, the Stadtwerke Hamm together with the city of Hamm built a graduation tower in the Bad Hamm spa gardens. This was handed over to the citizens on May 29, 2009.

history

On October 19, 1898, after a test drive on October 1, the first meter-gauge tram line in Hamm was opened by Elektrizitäts AG. The approximately 5.25-kilometer route led from Kronenburg through the city center to Vorsterhausen. The scheduled service started the following day. On May 15, 1901, another 2.5 kilometer stretch of route to the south of the city was put into operation from the city center. In 1903 the company Siemens-Schuckert took over the company and handed it over to the city in 1907. On October 10, 1910, the route from Westenschützenhof to Wiescherhöfen was opened with a length of around 3.26 kilometers. On September 16, 1913, a section from Nordstrasse to Heessener Strasse that was separated from the rest of the network was put into operation. This route was extended to the northern suburbs on August 4, 1917. Since it was not allowed to cross the state railway on Heessener Straße, it was divided into two parts until the railway line was raised in 1921.

After the First World War, passenger transport ceased due to inflation between 1923 and 1925. In 1924 and 1925, the railway carried waste material from the De Wendel colliery in Pelkum to today's Otto-Krafft-Platz, where a former floodplain of the Ahse, which was laid in 1913, was filled.

In 1925 four lines were used to transport passengers. In 1926 an extension from Radbod to Bockum was put into operation, in June 1928 the tram reached Pelkum and in May 1931 Herringen was connected to the network.

During the Second World War, the railway suffered a number of damage, so that operations had to be stopped on November 29, 1944. Line 4 to Bockum was discontinued on January 2, 1954, because after the Lippe Bridge was blown up towards the end of the war, the railway no longer had a connection to the rest of the network and had become an island operation. There was never a planned changeover to a bus operation.

Since it was not expected that the license, which ran until 1957, would be extended, almost no investments were made in the years after 1950. The suburban lines were gradually discontinued. On February 16, 1961 the city decided to extend the concession of the railway only for the discontinued operation. The last line was closed on April 2, 1961. Since then, the Stadtwerke has been a pure bus company.
