Schmehausen is a district of the Westphalian city of Hamm and was transformed from an agricultural to an industrial place through the construction of a thorium high-temperature reactor . The village was relocated because of the Westphalia power plant. Only a few fruit trees along the Lippestrasse give an idea of the former farmsteads.

The original meaning of the place name could come from "Schmiedehausen".

There is a castle on the Lippe that belonged to a robber baron.

The Geithe brook was piped up and runs under the power station. The direction of flow of the stream is unusual and could be a remnant of another course of the Lippe further south of today's Lippe.
