history

Herringen is mentioned for the first time in a document dated August 6, 1032. In it, the parish of Herringen is assigned to the Deutz Abbey in Deutz (Cologne) . The place and the founding of the church have existed since at least the 9th century. In the 19th century, the until then agricultural community transformed into an industrial town on the eastern edge of the Ruhr area. Coal discoveries led 1901 de establishing the mine Wendel / Henry-Robert (now mine east ), the operation, however, was set on 30 September, 2010. As a result, the population increased and the settlement structure became more urban. On June 6, 1961 (the day of the census ) the community had 14,769 inhabitants. These lived on 10.31 km². Herringen, however, was combined with Pelkum on January 1, 1968 to form the new large municipality of Pelkum. With the municipal reform of January 1, 1975, this was incorporated into the city of Hamm, with Herringen as a district again separated from Pelkum.
