Trianel power plant in Hamm from the air, 2013

Trianel (since December 2008 Trianel GmbH, previously Trianel European Energy Trading GmbH ) is a European energy supply company with a focus on energy trading , energy generation and consulting for public utilities .

Trianel was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between municipal utilities, municipal and regional supply companies in order to organize joint procurement on the liberalized German and European energy markets and to develop synergies. In the meantime (as of July 2012) more than 100 utilities belong to the Trianel network as partners or shareholders. These supply a total of more than six million people.

When Trianel GmbH was founded, Energie- und Wasserversorgung Mittleres Ruhrgebiet GmbH (ewmr) held the largest share of shareholders with 24.69 percent and thus the cities of Bochum , Herne and Witten .

Trianel has its headquarters on Krefelder Straße ( B57 ) in Aachen next to Tivoli . The majority of the companies involved originally came from northwest Germany and the Netherlands. Today (as of 2018) Trianel is active in Germany, the Netherlands , Austria and Switzerland .

Trianel Energie BV in Maastricht with a turnover of 70.5 million euros and around 40 employees had to file for bankruptcy on December 22, 2012.

Business areas

Energy trading

The company's main activity is trading in electricity and natural gas . Trianel bundles procurement for the supply companies involved.

Power generation

In addition to trading, Trianel is also active in energy generation as an operator of power plants and other energy systems. The municipal utility network is in charge of the construction and operation of the 850 MW combined cycle power plant in Hamm-Uentrop .

Since spring 2008, Trianel has been building a 750 MW coal-fired power plant at the Stummhafen in Lünen , which went online in 2013. Around 30 municipal utilities are involved in the power plant. It is the first large-scale coal-fired power plant in Germany to be operated jointly by municipal utilities. There are also plans to build another combined cycle power plant with an output of up to 1200 MW in Krefeld-Uerdingen .

With the Trianel wind park Borkum , the company was responsible for the construction of an offshore wind park in the North Sea, which went online on July 17, 2015. In addition, the company bought an onshore wind farm in Eisleben in April 2012 and in Rabenau (Hessen) in July 2015 .

Trianel also planned the construction of two pumped storage power plants in North Rhine-Westphalia and Thuringia . The water storage power plant Nethe should in Weserbergland lie. In addition, Trianel intention together with the Thuringian Fernwasserversorgung the dam Schmalwasser build a pumped storage power plant. Both projects were abandoned in 2018.

Trianel has been operating an underground gas storage facility in Epe since October 2008 . The stored gas enables the municipal utilities involved to temporarily store gas that has been purchased cheaply and thus absorb price peaks.

new technologies

In addition to energy procurement and generation, Trianel is looking for new solutions in the areas of e-mobility , smart metering , decentralized electricity generation and energy efficiency in another business area . The products developed there in a network with project partners are then offered to the municipal utilities involved for sale when they are ready for the market.

Services

Trianel also offers its shareholders and customers services such as advice and know-how transfer, emissions trading , financial services, network and load management, and energy billing. In 2012, a profit participation will be paid out to the shareholders for the first time.

owner

The two largest owners are Stadtwerke Bochum Holding GmbH (14.07%) and Stadtwerke Aachen AG (11.97%). A total of 58 companies are involved in Trianel GmbH, four of which are based in Switzerland, the Netherlands and Austria. Most of the owners came from North Rhine-Westphalia.

Managing directors

Sven Becker has been the management spokesman since 2005 .

criticism

Trianel has come under fire on various occasions with its power plant projects. Particularly in connection with the coal-fired power plant in Lünen , the company has been in the focus of environmental and nature conservation associations as well as citizens' initiatives since 2007.

The BUND has successfully sued in 2011 against the immissionsrechtlichen preliminary for the Trianel coal-fired power plant in Luenen. The Münster Higher Administrative Court overturned the preliminary ruling on December 1, 2011 because the environmental compatibility of the power plant had not yet been adequately proven. Trianel wants to close the gaps in the proof of environmental compatibility and assumes that a new preliminary decision can then be issued.

The fact that Trianel is now planning to build a gas and steam power plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen is not least due to a protest campaign on the Campact online platform . Originally, the company wanted to build a 750 MW coal-fired power plant in Krefeld, which was to go online at the end of 2012 and be fired with imported hard coal. In response to the federal government's changed energy policy, however, the municipal utilities involved voted in July 2011 to switch from coal to gas as a climate-damaging energy source for further planning.

With its plans to build pumped storage power plants, the company sometimes meets with resistance. The plans for the Trianel water reservoir in Thuringia are polarizing, especially because the facility is to be built near the Rennsteig , one of the oldest and most traditional hiking trails in Germany.

Also in the Eifel, where Trianel wanted to use the Rursee as a lower basin for a pumped storage power plant, the plans met with some fierce criticism. The opponents of the project feared damage to nature as well as near-natural tourism, which is the economic mainstay of the structurally weak region. The storage facility was to be built in the immediate vicinity of the Eifel National Park .
