The seat of the institution is Erfurt . It has a share capital of EUR 120.0 million. The institution is run by the Free State of Thuringia (67.3%) and the Long-Distance Water Association of North and East Thuringia (32.7%). Thomas Stepputat has been the general manager since January 1, 2016.

The Thuringian long-distance water supply emerged from the Thuringian dam administration founded on June 1, 1993, which joined the North and East Thuringia Long-Distance Water Association, which was also founded on June 1, 1993, on January 1, 2003 after changing its name.

The TFW extracts raw water from dams, prepares it for drinking water , delivers it to local water suppliers, operates among other things 71 dams, 8 of them drinking water dams and generates electrical energy in hydropower plants. The Thuringian long-distance water supply maintains the dam and hydrological archive in Tambach-Dietharz on behalf of the Free State of Thuringia .
