The Stadtwerke Aachen AG (STAWAG) are the public utilities of the city of Aachen and offer services and products in the areas of gas , district heating , water and electricity on. They are a subsidiary of the EVA, Energieversorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH Aachen Group, to which other subsidiaries belong ( ASEAG , FACTUR Billing Solution). In addition, STAWAG has a 16 percent stake in the telecommunications company NetAachen .

STAWAG history

The history of STAWAG can be traced back to 1838, when the gas enlightenment institute was founded by the British Imperial Continental Gas Association from London and the first gas works for street lighting was built.

The construction of the Eicher Stollen waterworks began in 1871 and it was put into operation in 1880, where groundwater was treated to make drinking water . An elevated water tank was built for the central supply and a network of water pipes was laid in the city.

In 1893, the Schuckert company built the Borngasse power station and began supplying electricity on behalf of the city. In 1901 the city took over this field of activity on its own. In 1912 she also took over the gas works and founded the gas, electricity and water works of the city of Aachen , which combined the previous supply services in one company. In 1938 the name was changed to Stadtwerke Aachen, a municipal company that was converted into the STAWAG joint stock company in 1967. After the takeover of ebv-fernwärme GmbH in 1986, the range of services was expanded to include district heating for the urban area. Together with the waterworks of the Aachen district (later enwor ), STAWAG founded the WAG Nordeifel in 1997 , which was to cover a large part of the water requirements of the city and the Aachen district with soft reservoir water. In 1999, together with various German and Dutch public utilities, the municipal energy trading company Trianel European Energy Trading GmbH was founded with its headquarters in Aachen. In 2000, the Stadtwerke took over various supply areas in the outskirts of the city. Two years later (2002) the accounting company Factur Billing Solutions GmbH was founded and STAWAG Energie GmbH was brought into being, which is responsible for the company's own energy generation. As part of the unbundling process, STAWAG founded STAWAG Netz GmbH in 2004: According to EU guidelines and the provisions of the Energy Industry Act, energy suppliers must separate the grid operation (electricity and gas) division from the generation and sales division in order to increase competition. In 2006 she founded another subsidiary: STAWAG Abwasser GmbH. The affected personnel was transferred from the city of Aachen to STAWAG. The sewer network remained the property of the city of Aachen (operator model). For this purpose, an operations management contract was agreed between the city and STAWAG.

STAWAG is also active in the field of alternative drive types: in 2003 it opened the first natural gas filling station in the city and district of Aachen, and in 2007 the first bioethanol filling station. In 2009 she set up public electric filling stations in Aachen.

On January 1st, 2009 the two Regio-Carriers accom GmbH & Co. KG (a subsidiary of STAWAG) and NetCologne founded the company NetAachen .

The company has a 5% stake in the THTR-300 nuclear power plant .

Participation in the hard coal power plant Krefeld

STAWAG wanted to participate in a planned coal-fired power plant of the Trianel municipal utilities in Krefeld-Uerdingen . A citizens' initiative tried to force the exit from the project with the help of a referendum. On January 13, 2011, however, STAWAG decided independently not to participate in the hard coal power plant.
