The Stadtwerke Düren GmbH is an energy utilities and energy service provider based in Düren .
organization
The shareholders of Stadtwerke Düren GmbH (SWD) are City of Düren with 50.1% and Innogy SE with 49.9% . In 2016, sales totaled EUR 129 million. The company has 260 employees, including 18 trainees. SWD supplies around 100,000 households in and around Düren with gas , electricity , water and, in some cases, with heat . RURENERGIE GmbH was founded in 2011 together with the Düren district and Sparkasse Düren . The first project was in Inden, directly behind the Weisweiler power plant , at the end of 2011, the largest solar park in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Inden solar park . In the meantime, further photovoltaic systems have been installed in schools in the Düren district area ( girls ' high school in Düren , high school in Kreuzau). RURENERGIE is also involved in the wind farm in Echtz.
Stadtwerke Düren is also involved in several other wind farms (e.g. in Titz Düshorner Heide and others), operates combined heat and power plants in hospitals and industrial customers and offers a wide range of energy efficiency and energy saving options. In spring 2011, for example, the energy-saving center was opened at the headquarters in Arnoldsweilerstraße .
Since 2017, Energieversorgung has also been offering photovoltaic systems for private households and businesses.
Stadtwerke Düren supplies the city of Düren and parts of the Merzenich community with drinking water . Since the end of March 2013, 55% of the water has been taken from the Wehebach dam, the rest is taken from wells. The Obermaubach waterworks serves as a reserve waterworks . The municipal works laboratory , in which the drinking water is examined, is located in the waterworks building . In the fountain in Dr.-Overhues-Allee, 1.5 million m³ of drinking water is extracted annually, which is pumped to the water tank on Annakirmesplatz. That is around 20% of the 5.3 million liters of drinking water released annually, which are fed into the 730 km long pipeline network. Another 20% comes from the waterworks in Ellen . A smaller part comes from the Concordia waterworks in Kreuzau and the Langerwehe water association . Before 2013, the Rur served as the "main source" for Düren's drinking water supply. The SWD waterworks is located below the Obermaubach an der Rur reservoir in the Kreuzau municipality. Today it serves as a pure "emergency facility" if other sources of supply fail. The certified water laboratory is also located in the building.
On January 1, 2013, due to legal requirements, there was a full separation between the sale of gas, water, electricity, heat and data on the one hand and the operation of the networks on the other. That is why the subsidiary “Leitpartner GmbH” was founded, which took over, operates, maintains and expands the networks in Düren and parts of the Merzenich community from regionetz GmbH (50/50 participation by SWD / EWV).

history
The history of the Stadtwerke goes back to the middle of the 19th century and today unites several supply facilities. In 1858 the gas works, which was initially used for street lighting, started operations. In the 1880s, central lines provided clean water for the first time, and in 1901 the electricity company began producing electricity. In 1909 the water tower in today's Friedrich-Ebert-Platz was inaugurated. It was destroyed in 1944. In 1911 the gas, water and electricity works were merged. From 1931 long-distance gas was supplied.
On April 1, 1939, the gas, water and electricity works were combined to form the Düren municipal works. The location was Düren-Nord on the site of the current city building . Exactly one year later took over the city works that were active only in the old city of Düren, the water supply system of Rölsdorf . In 1958 the city built the first indoor swimming pool in Düren, the Citybad (demolished in 1998). Stadtwerke took over the management. In 1968 the municipal utilities relocated to a new building on Arnoldsweilerstraße. In the same year, the company switched to natural gas. Today's supply area includes the city of Düren and the neighboring municipality of Merzenich, which is supplied with gas and water. In April 2007 the Stadtwerke (SWD) opened their new customer center, which has around 45,000 visitors a year.
The municipal utilities have significantly expanded their range over the past few years and gradually developed from an energy supplier to an energy service provider. In addition to energy products, the company offers B. photovoltaics, energy consulting and heat contracting models. The regenerative projects of SWD at the local level include the biogas plant at the Schoellershammer company as well as the solar power plant built jointly with the Dürener Kreisbahn on the hall roofs of the Kreisbahn or the largest solar power plant in North Rhine-Westphalia until the end of 2011 (joint project of Rurenergie GmbH in which SWD is involved 24.8 percent is involved). Wind power is now also part of the SWD's generation mix. Together with 29 other municipal utilities, they are involved in several wind farms (including in Scotland, Northern Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia) through the Green GECCO company.
With the municipality of Merzenich, SWD is implementing an environmentally friendly concept for the heat supply of 130 buildings in the Morschenich-Neu district. The unique thing about it: It can be operated almost CO 2 -neutral. A separate heating center on site with an output of 300 to 500 kilowatts supplies the buildings with heat via an underground pipe network. It generates the energy by burning wood pellets and thus from renewable raw materials. In relation to natural gas combustion, this saves 25 tons of CO 2 annually. A 30,000 liter hot water tank ensures the continuous supply of inexpensive and environmentally friendly heat for the connected buildings.
Since January 2010, Stadtwerke Düren has been offering environmentally friendly electricity with the product SWD-Naturstrom, 100 percent from domestic hydropower. At the same time, Stadtwerke Düren converted its entire own consumption of around 5 million kilowatt hours to natural electricity.
