history

The water tower

The Kreuzberg (Kruuschberg) underwent a leveling redesign by the Düren Beautification Association in 1878 with the creation of the Vereinsstraße north (Schoellerstraße) and south (Euskirchener Straße) and was named as the end of Kölnstraße Kölnplatz. From August 17, 1909 (inauguration on October 27, 1909) to February 1945, the Düren new water tower with a large system, including illuminated fountains , stood in the interior . One day before the Allied military government began its work in Düren (February 25, 1945), German troops blew up the water tower. In October 1957 the ruin was removed.

From 1908 to 1944 the electric tram circled the water tower on the southern side, there was also a stop at Kölnplatz. After the reconstruction after the Second World War, it then drove right through the interior. Since the area between Kölnstrasse and Kölner Landstrasse rises relatively sharply, slippery rails could prevent fully occupied cars from coming up the mountain. Sometimes the trains stopped in the middle of Kölnplatz so that a second railcar had to support them. The line was closed in 1963.

On June 26, 1950, it was decided to rename the square in recognition of the services of Friedrich Ebert. In the 1960s, plans were drawn up by the city administration to redesign the neuralgic traffic junction as a road crossing . The B56 should be led over a bridge over the B264. All other roads would then have been "pinched off".

In the 2000s, the interior was redesigned with night-lit fabrics from GKD Gebrüder Kufferath .
