The new water tower stood in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia , on Kölnplatz, today Friedrich-Ebert-Platz .

history

The water tower was inaugurated on October 27, 1909. The planner was city architect Heinrich Dauer . The construction was necessary because there were problems with the water supply in the eastern part of the city. The old water tower on Annakirmesplatz was no longer enough. The planning for the construction of the Riemann barracks on what is now Euskirchener Strasse in the years 1912 to 1915 may have been a decisive factor.

The water tower, which stood in the middle of today's roundabout, was approx. 57 meters high and the entire area including the outdoor area had a diameter of 47 m. The viewing area was designed at 42 m. The total area of the building was 6100 m².

The tower was surrounded by colonnades , a portico. To the south of the tower was the waiting room for the tram and to the north was the tower watcher's apartment. The tram drove around the facility, from downtown to Kölner Landstrasse .

The tower guard was not only guardian of the water tower, but also for the interests of the little citizens. The water tower could also be visited by the citizens, from bottom to top up to the viewing platform at a height of 42 m, and this once a week at a price of RM 0.50 .

Financing the building turned out to be difficult. The reserve from the reserve fund of the waterworks was only 40,000 marks, so that 110,000 marks had to be raised through loans . But then 120,000 marks were still missing for the architectural furnishings of the area. Kommerzialrat Wilhelm Hoesch agreed to donate 130,000 marks to the city for this purpose. Later he made 17,000 marks available for the installation of the 25 m high light fountain .

In front of the water tower was a large water basin, which received the water from the cascades .

A plaque of honor was placed on the colonnade in 1933 . It had the following text:

FROM

10. RHINE
INFANTRY REGIMENT no. 161
LET YOUR LIFE FOR HOMELAND
IN THE YEARS 1914-1918
88 OFFICERS
2520 UNDER OFFICERS
AND TEAMS
hundred and sixty
STORM U. BATTLE PROVEN
EVER HÄLTS FIDELITY
THE OATH IT OVER THE SWORD

At the front of the colonnade stood an elk and a stone bison on each corner .

During the Second World War, there were German observers on the water tower , who indicated the direction of the German artillery during the fighting in the Hürtgenwald against the Americans . They blew up the tower on February 24, 1945 so that the Americans couldn't use it as an observation post. From there you not only had a view of the Hürtgenwald, but also of the Zülpicher Börde , the Jülich region and as far as Cologne .

In October 1957 the ruin was removed. You can still walk past the stones in Kölnstrasse today , because they were used for the surrounding wall of the Adenauerpark, as were the remains of the city theater .
