The Riemann barracks stood in the district town of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia .

On January 13, 1912, Mayor August Klotz informed the city council about the increased search for garrison types in the Rhineland. Three days later he submitted to the War Ministry that a garrison should be established in Düren . After numerous changes in terms of sizes, etc., the barracks on Königgrätzer Strasse was built in 1913, which was later called Hindenburgstrasse and was then renamed Euskirchener Strasse . Today there are two supermarkets and the fire station there.

The barracks, consisting of an infantry and an artillery barracks, was inaugurated on July 29, 1914 and named after Julius Riemann in 1938 .

The infantry barracks consisted of the following houses and facilities:

  • Family house for 12 unmarried NCOs
  • Staff house
  • Official House
  • Crew house I and II for four companies
  • Farm buildings
  • Team house III
  • Vehicle shed of the machine gun company
  • Stable of the machine gun company
  • Armory and ironmongery

The artillery barracks consisted of:

  • Family house for ten families
  • Farm buildings

  • Sheds for vehicles

  • Arms mastery
  • Riding houses with stable
  • Horse stables for the battery
  • Vehicle and chamber building
  • Infirmary
  • Hardware forge

On August 1, 1914, the Dürener Zeitung published a lengthy report on the new garrison town of Düren.

The infantry barracks on Hindenburgstrasse, used as living space, were opened on 27./28. Evacuated February 1937 by order of the military authorities. The artillery barracks on Hindenburgstrasse, where around 90 families still lived, had to be cleared by April 1st. On June 1, 1938, the 3rd Battalion of the 78th Infantry Regiment moved into the Riemann barracks on Hindenburgstrasse. The first bombs fell in Düren on May 12, 1940 near the Riemann barracks. When the city ​​was destroyed on November 16, 1944 , only one block was hit, whereas the tank barracks was almost completely destroyed.

The following is noted for November 6, 1947: “In order to roughly remedy the great housing shortage in the city of Düren, the Riemann barracks was approved for the expansion of apartments upon application by the regional finance president. After the negotiation with the chief finance president on the part of the city administration, work will begin immediately. "

On October 4, 1931, an emergency church was set up in the then vacant Riemann barracks on Euskirchener Strasse , dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua was consecrated. The southern school was located in the barracks from Easter 1947. * On December 15, 1958, the St. Michael kindergarten was opened in Block 1 of the Riemann barracks

The demolition of the old Riemann barracks began on May 17, 1973 and was completed with the demolition of the last block on January 9, 1974.
