history
Numerous archaeological finds prove that Kreuzau was already settled in pre-Roman times. In 1319 the place was first mentioned in a document as "Auwe superior". The current name Kreuzau appears for the first time in the 15th century. It is believed that the name arose after the church dedicated to the holy cross .
The life story of Saint Heribert , Archbishop of Cologne and patron saint of the church in Kreuzau, reveals a 1000-year history of the place. His mother is buried in the church in Kreuzau.
Incorporations
The municipality of Kreuzau was created by § 8 of the law on the reorganization of municipalities in the Düren district of June 24, 1969 (GV.NRW. P. 372) in the form of the amalgamation of the municipalities of Bogheim, Boich-Leversbach , Drove, Kreuzau, Stockheim, Thum , Üdingen and Winden ( Kreuzau Office ) with effect from July 1, 1969. By § 14 of the law for the reorganization of the communities and districts of the reorganization area Aachen from December 14, 1971 (GV.NRW. P. 411) the communities Obermaubach-Schlagstein and Untermaubach as well as part of the community Hürtgenwald (Langenbroich) became parts of the former community Lendersdorf-Krauthausen (Schneidhausen and Welk) and parts of the former municipality of Niederau incorporated into the municipality of Kreuzau with effect from January 1, 1972. The Kreuzau office was dissolved. The legal successor is the municipality of Kreuzau.

These are described in § 2 of the main statute of the municipality. The coat of arms or the coat of arms symbols may only be used by third parties with the approval of the council. The approval is deemed to be revocable.
"The coat of arms shows a black head of shield covered with a continuous golden (yellow) cross and a black lion with a red tongue in gold (yellow)."
- meaning
The cross indicates the community name, which is given in a document from 1319 as "Auwe superior". In the middle of the 15th century, the name of the church consecrated to the Holy Cross was added to the "Auwe". This finally resulted in “Kreuzau”. The main component of the coat of arms is the lion, which is copied from an old aldermen's seal from January 23, 1356 and which is undoubtedly the Jülich lion .
With the area change agreement dated September 12, 1968, the previous communities of Bogheim, Boich-Leversbach, Drove, Kreuzau, Stockheim, Thum, Üdingen and Winden merged to form the new community of Kreuzau and agreed on the coat of arms of the former community of Kreuzau.
The flag shows the coat of arms of the municipality on a length divided by black and yellow.
