Coat of arms and banner

The municipality was granted the right to use a coat of arms on October 24, 1975 with a certificate from the District President of Cologne and, on June 23, 1978, the right to use a flag (as a banner). The coat of arms is based on a seal from 1447, which only showed the double-headed eagle. The tournament collar comes from Mr. Stach from Golzheim and was added later. The four Lätze represent the districts of Alt-Merzenich, Girbelsrath, Golzheim and Morschenich.

Blazon : "In the red flag cloth above, a golden double-headed eagle raised by a continuous four-lipped tournament collar."

history

Europe's deepest Stone Age well (over 15 m deep) (around 5100 BC) was discovered near Merzenich-Morschenich and recovered in the block.

The name of the place is derived from Martiniacum , a compound of the Latin personal name Martin [i] us and the Celtic suffix - (i) acum (fr: -acum), meaning "home of Martinus". Merzenich is mentioned for the first time in 1225 in a document from Count Otto von Neuenahr . There was a castle in the village that has completely disappeared apart from a few moats. In the 19th century the castle fell into disrepair and was never rebuilt.

In 1360, Duke Wilhelm I of Jülich confirmed the obligation to deliver the wax interest from a total of 26 places in the Bürgewald to the parish church of Arnoldsweiler . Mertzenich is also listed among the 26 places . The residents of these places, including those from Merzenich, had to bring the wax interest to Arnoldsweiler every year on Whit Tuesday . The Merzenicher had to deliver a candle of 12 pounds of wax. Thus Merzenich is one of the places that had to deliver the most amount of wax. This candle offering is based on the legend of St. Arnoldus , through whom the villages were only allowed to use the forest. Previously, this was under the imperial wild ban , entry was forbidden for the common population. For centuries, the authorized communities used the forest equally, only in 1775 was each community assigned a specific piece of forest. Merzenich also received a piece of the forest, the Merzenich Bürge , also called Merzenich-Girbelsrather Bürge. This part of the forest has meanwhile been cut down and dredged. In addition to this community forest , the Merzenich population was able to use the Merzenich hereditary forest , which also belongs to the Bürgewald .

In the regests of the Archbishops of Cologne, Golzheim is mentioned for the first time on November 28, 1015. In 1382 the village of Gerbätzräude (Girbelsrath) was ceded to the Archbishop of Cologne . Morsaz (Morschenich) was first mentioned in 1158. There were also 1939 to 1955 a large-scale test facility, called pit Union 103 , tried in one, brown coal in underground mining dismantle. A daily output of around 10,000 tons of brown coal was planned, but this was never achieved. The average daily output was 200 tons.
