The windmill in the 17th century

The former tower windmill stands high above Merzenich in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia on the corner of Mühlenstraße and Mühlendriesch.

history

The mill was built in 1608 as a stone tower windmill. In 1822 the building was called a grinding mill . The owner was the widow Schoogh. But the windmill could only work about four months a year. Therefore there was a lot of debts at the mill. In 1895 it was referred to as a former mill , so it was already closed. The ruin was rebuilt and renovated in 1912. From 1936 the former windmill was used as a water tower . Today the tower is used for events.

The former windmill is entered in the list of monuments under No. 21 . The memorial entry reads:

“1608 according to the inscription in the masonry; Renovation and reconstruction in 1912 according to the weather vane; 4-storey round brick tower with a basket arched passage on the ground floor, Renaissance portals on both sides made of limestone with diamond ashlar, irregular window division with ashlar walls, the upper tower area rebuilt in 1912, e.g. Partly clad with wooden shingles, slate roof, weathered coat of arms stone over the city-side portal.
