The Horrem station is a triangular station in the Kerpen district of Horrem. It is located on the high-speed line Cologne – Aachen and is the southern starting point of the Erftbahn . Horrem station is served by the regional trains of the Deutsche Bahn and the S-Bahn of the S-Bahn Cologne ; Long-distance trains on the high-speed line pass through the station without stopping.

Track systems

Rhein-Sieg-Express stops at platform 6 (2009)

Horrem station has seven tracks on the Cologne – Aachen high-speed line. Track 1 is used for the S-Bahn in the direction of Cologne, Track 2 for the S-Bahn in the direction of Aachen. The regional express trains from Aachen to Cologne run from platform 3; from platform 6 the regional express trains from Cologne to Aachen. Tracks 4 and 5 are the continuous main tracks of the railway line and do not have platforms; long-distance and freight trains cross the Horrem station on them. The continuous platform 7 is also without a platform; for World Youth Day 2005 it was provided with a temporary side platform. The Erftbahn forks in front of Horrem. Track 10 is on the western branch to Aachen, immediately north of the other tracks. Trains stop there that turn in Horrem. On the eastern branch in the direction of Cologne is track 19, which is northeast of the signal box and requires a footpath of around 350 meters from the other station tracks. The trains on the Bedburg – Cologne route (RB38) run there.

Before the expansion of the Cologne – Aachen railway line, Horrem station had a freight station north of the railway line and loading tracks for general cargo traffic . From 1999 to 2001 these tracks were completely removed. 200 parking spaces were created on the site of the former freight yard.

Conversion of the reception building and forecourt

Former reception building (until 2012)
Interior of the new station building

Horrem station was redesigned from 2010 to 2014. While the reconstruction from 1999 to 2001 rearranged the track systems, the reception building , the station forecourt and the bus station were renewed during the second period . Since the new parking lot was built on the site of the former freight yard on the north side, the former, smaller parking lot southwest of the reception building could be closed. In its place, a new bus station for the VRS lines towards Bergheim, Bedburg, Elsdorf, Erftstadt, Frechen, Hüelte, Hürth , Kerpen, Königshoven and Sindorf was built in 2010 . The centerpiece is a long combination platform on level with track 1. A bike station , a pedestrian bridge and an office building with a kiosk, a regional Turkish snack chain and an American fast-food branch were built to the south of this .

Then in November 2012 the old station building and the previous bus station with four bus platforms were demolished. A new station building was built as part of a pilot project by Deutsche Bahn as "Germany's first green station " according to ecological criteria and equipped with environmentally friendly technology. The approximately 620 m² station is CO 2 -neutral , using technologies such as photovoltaics and geothermal energy as well as ecological building materials. The 340 m² photovoltaic system is to provide around 31,000  kWh of electricity annually, and additional solar collectors are used to heat domestic water. Ten boreholes were drilled into the ground to a depth of 100 m for the geothermal system. Rainwater is collected on green roofs and used to supply industrial water . The outer facade is clad with slate typical of the region . The new station was opened in June 2014.

Inside the reception building there is a kiosk, a train station bookshop , a handicapped-accessible toilet, a waiting area with 24 seats, screens showing departure times and “video information” that can be used to communicate with service staff.

Crossing the Horremer jump

The tectonic fault of the Horremer Jump, which is part of the Erftsprungs, runs right through the station . With a view to displacements of up to 0.9 mm per year, rail extensions are installed in the tracks of the S-Bahn line and the non-continuous main tracks of the regional train at this point. The continuous main tracks of the high-speed line will be led over the Horremer Sprung via a newly built hydraulically adjustable underground bridge.
