history

Detail of the map of Cologne and the surrounding area at the beginning of the 19th century

Porz was first mentioned in 1019. The name is probably derived from either the Latin name porta (door, gate) or portus (port). Porz already had a supraregional court in 1286. In the following years Porz developed into the administrative seat of the Porz Office in the Duchy of Berg . This also included the places on the right bank of the Rhine, Brück , Buchheim , Dünnwald , Eil , Ensen , Flittard , Grengel , Heumar , Langel , Libur , Lind , Merheim , Mülheim am Rhein , Rath , Stammheim , Urbach , Wahn , Westhoven and Zündorf , as well as Bergisch Gladbach , Bensberg , Dürscheid and Immekeppel .

In 1795 French troops occupied Porz. In the years that followed, the place belonged to Mairie Wahn in the canton of Mülheim in the Mülheim arrondissement in the Rhine department in the Grand Duchy of Berg . Porz belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia from 1815 and became part of the Heumar mayor. In 1875 the official seat of Heumar was moved to Porz. In 1910 a town hall was built in Porz for the mayor's office Heumar, which was renamed Amt Porz in 1928 and to which the Amt Wahn was attached in 1929. Since 1932 the Porz office belonged to the Rheinisch-Bergisch district . In September 1951, the municipality of Porz received city rights . On January 1, 1975, Porz was incorporated into the city of Cologne with some other parts of the city by the Cologne Act as part of the municipal reorganization .

Infrastructure

Porzity

The Porz district is both the administrative and cultural center of the Porz district: This is where, for example, the town hall, the tax office, the employment agency, the Porz am Rhein hospital and a pedestrian zone with a market square and shops are located. In order to better distinguish it from the district of the same name, the district of Porz is sometimes also called Porz-Zentrum. As a marketing campaign, the expression porzity with the additional target of many nice people had been coined. The Hertie department store was an important part of the center until 2009 . The “Neue Porzer Mitte” project is intended to generate new impulses for further development.

Porz is connected to the Cologne S-Bahn network through a regional train station . At the same time, trains of the Regional Express on the right Rhine route and the Sieg route stop .

Attractions

Germania settlement

Workers' houses in the Germania settlement.

The almost completely preserved Germania settlement was laid out from 1899 to 1903. It consists of a director's villa with a park (Concordiaplatz), masters 'houses (Germaniastraße) as well as staff and workers' houses (Glasstraße) for the workforce of the former Germania mirror glass works . The layout and architecture of the houses reflect the social hierarchy of the residents at the time: the higher the status, the larger their houses were and the closer they lived to the factory. The settlement is a listed building .
