Ensen is a district of Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine , in the district of Porz .
location
Ensen borders Westhoven to the west, the Gremberg district to the northeast with the Gremberg shunting yard and Porz to the southeast . In the south Ensen borders the Rhine , on the opposite bank of the Rhine are the districts of Weiß and Rodenkirchen .
history
The name Ensen is probably of Celtic origin and means flowing water . Due to the flood problems caused by the Rhine, which especially harms the residents of the Westhoven district, the name Ensen is derived from the word "island", as it is higher up than the neighboring Westhoven. Westhoven, on the other hand, is derived from Wüsthoven , as the height difference between the two parts of the city becomes visible during floods. Ensen was first mentioned in a book of miracles by St. Anno II.
The village of Ensen, an independent parish since 1773, had around 160 inhabitants at the end of the 18th century. Politically, Ensen has belonged to the Porz office in the Duchy of Berg since the Middle Ages . In 1795 the place was occupied by French revolutionary troops. In 1815 Ensen came to the Prussian Rhine Province . At the beginning of the 20th century a psychiatric clinic was built in Ensen . Since 1929 Ensen belonged to the Porz office and from 1932 to the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis . It was incorporated into Cologne in 1975.
religion
The Catholic parish church of Sankt Laurentius was built between 1894 and 1896. The building consists of a neo-Gothic, three-aisled stepped hall. The choir has moved in and the church is covered by a gable roof with transverse gables and ridge turrets. The square tower has several corner turrets and an octagonal helmet.
