Wahn is a district in the Porz district in the south-east of Cologne .

location

The district delusion bordered to the east with the Federal Highway 59 at Wahnheide . In the south it borders on Lind , in the west on Libur and Zündorf and in the north on Elsdorf .

Surname

The name of the village of Wahn probably comes from the castle of the same name. Wanda = turning point = limit. A shift in sound probably turned Wanda into madness.

history

In 1100 a document mentions a Conradus from Wanda, who was probably the lord of what would later become the castle of Wahn. The village of Wahn was probably a settlement of servants and dependents of the castle of the same name. Wahn has been part of the Porz office in the Duchy of Berg since the Middle Ages . The castle was rebuilt into a chateau between 1753 and 1757.

With the establishment of the Grand Duchy of Berg (1806) and the restructuring of the administration based on the French model (1808), Wahn came to the Rhine department . From 1815 to 1929 Wahn was the seat of a Prussian mayor's office (apart from Wahn itself, Langel, Zündorf, Libur and Lind also belonged to the administrative district of the mayor's office) in the Mülheim district . Then the administration went to Porz, today's Cologne-Porz district .

In 1797 Wahn had 52 fire places with 282 inhabitants, 4 horses and 17 head of cattle. This included 736 acres of farmland and 22 acres of forest. 1997, 200 years later, Wahn had 5089 inhabitants in 2140 apartments and 2154 cars.

Until the municipal reorganization in 1975, Wahn was part of the then town of Porz am Rhein, now part of Cologne.

Catholic Church

St. Aegidius Church

The first mention can be found in old records from 1358 about a Catholic chapel in the Porzer city archive. When the old church, which had been rebuilt several times, was demolished in 1893, the remains of a chapel from the 11th century were uncovered. For centuries, the Wahner church belonged to the parish of Ober- and later Niederündorf. The parish Wahn was not established until 1835. The neo-Gothic parish church of St. Aegidius was built between 1893 and 1895. A certain A. Becker is named as the builder . The parish church became known nationwide through the unconventional window in the nave. In addition to the traditional symbols and images, a depicted aircraft also clearly relates to the adjacent Cologne-Bonn Airport.

The most important building by Wahn is Wahn Castle . It was first mentioned in a document in 1358 as "Hoff zu Wande". It was a typical Rhenish moated castle , consisting of a residential tower , gate , moat and outer bailey , which was converted into a late baroque castle in the middle of the 18th century . Today the complex houses the theater studies collection of the University of Cologne and thus one of the largest collections of its kind in the world. In addition, Wahn Castle has been available to the Cologne registry office as a branch office for the implementation of marriages since January 2008. The castle has been owned by the von Eltz-Rübenach family since 1820 .

Wahn Training Area and Wahn Air Force Barracks

Luftwaffe barracks madness

The Wahn military training area is located east of Wahn - between Lohmarer Wald, Sülztal and Königsforst .

The military use of today's barracks area and the adjoining military training area Wahner Heide goes back to the beginning of the 19th century; see: Military training areas (German Reich) .

There is a military cemetery on the grounds of the Wahn Air Force Barracks . In addition to prisoners from the war of 1870/71 and the First World War , the marines Max Reichpietsch and Albin Köbis , who were shot dead in this barracks on September 5, 1917, are also buried there.

In the cemetery there is a memorial stone with relief images by Max Reichpietsch and Albin Köbis; in Wahn two streets were named after the executed sailors.

After the withdrawal of the Belgian tank units in 2004, parts of the former training area were opened to the public as a recreation area by the Bundeswehr (legal successor); specially marked paths must be used in this area, as the area is still contaminated with ammunition.
