The Eltzhof is a historic estate in Cologne-Wahn , which originally belonged directly to the agricultural operation of Schloss Wahn and is still used today as the so-called " KulturGut Eltzhof ".

history

Today's Eltzhof was first documented in 1735 under its former name "Paulshof". The then squire Maximilian Damian Henrich Freiherr Schall von Bell transferred the ownership of the " Paulusguth " to the " honorable and virtuous Luciae Marx and the same legitimate son Johann Halbach ". The noble family Heereman von Zuydtwyck then followed as owners at the end of the 18th century. By marriage, the farm belonged to the von Eltz family from 1835 and is called "Eltzhof" from that time on. The building ensemble has therefore belonged to Schloss Wahn from the start and is only separated from the palace garden by an avenue. The Eltzhof was designed as a building ensemble that is closed on all sides and is grouped around a large inner courtyard. The two-storey house of the estate was built around 1830. The adjoining workers' houses date from 1855; Cowshed and barn (1880), a blacksmith's shop (1850), the pigsty (1865) and a horse stable from around 1910 complete the historic farm complex. The former Chamber of Agriculture Cologne took advantage of these leased to them Eltzhof after the end of World War II as a teaching and experimental farm. From this time on, numerous series of tests were carried out with regard to seed propagation, soil improvement and weed and pest control. On the south wing of the manor complex, the facades, roofs and windows were restored in 1989 and 1990. In 2004 the lease contract was terminated after the merger of the Rhineland and Westphalia chambers of agriculture.

After the lease with the Chamber of Agriculture in Cologne had expired, the owner family von Eltz-Rübenach decided to convert their historic estate into a socially and culturally sophisticated " meeting place " and to treat Wahn Castle - and its adjoining Eltzhof - as an ensemble in future. In cooperation with the Wahner artist Roland Kulik , the concept was then developed to make the Eltzhof a venue and venue for various cultural and custom-related events. In coordination with the monument authority of the city of Cologne, extensive renovation and expansion measures were carried out on the entire building ensemble from 2004 in order to be able to meet these goals. Today the Eltzhof houses, among other things, a theater that can accommodate around 450 people, as well as a brewery restaurant (with beer garden ) of the Cologne Cathedral brewery , which is located in the rooms of the former farm workers. In the closed inner courtyard, with its historic cobblestone pavement , all kinds of open air events take place.
