Emons Publishing House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Emons Verlag was founded in 1984 by Hermann-Josef Emons. In its first year, Emons launched the Cologne thriller »Tödlicher Klüngel« by Christoph Gottwald, the first German local thriller, and thus pioneered the »regional thriller« genre. There are now over 80 regional crime series at Emons Verlag, from north to south, from east to west. Since 2009 Emons thrillers have also been playing abroad (Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and many more). Best-selling authors such as Frank Schätzing, Friedrich Ani, Volker Kutscher and Nicola Förg have published at Emons. Emons crime novels are also successful abroad: from Japan to the USA, from Slovenia to Finland - translations are published in over thirteen countries. In 2014, publisher Hejo Emons was awarded the Ehrenglauser Prize from the Syndicate authors' association for his services to German-language crime literature. In 2019, Emons took over Grafit Verlag in Dortmund. In 2008 the publisher created the first volume in a new series of books entitled »111 Cologne Places that One Must See«: Discovery guides that lead to remote places and are not only aimed at tourists, but above all also at locals who are new to their homeland want to discover, judge. The numerous volumes are now available for metropolises at home and abroad as well as for tourist travel destinations worldwide. The most successful volumes in this series are available in numerous translations and are distributed by Emons in the USA, UK, Italy and France itself. The publisher has made a name for itself in the non-fiction area with its carefully edited illustrated books and monographs. Photo books by well-known photographers have been part of the publishing program from the very beginning.

Founding of the publishing house

In 1984 Hermann-Josef "Hejo" Emons founded his publishing house of the same name in Lütticher Straße, Cologne. In 2015 the publishing house moved to Cäcilienstraße in Cologne. The first published title was the city guide Cologne between Himmel und Ääd , which presented unknown views and other perspectives of the city of Cologne.

Development of the publishing program

In the first few years the publisher concentrated on titles about Cologne and the Rhineland. In the meantime, titles that go beyond the Rhineland borders are also part of the program, but without giving up the regional concept. (With a few exceptions: In August 2009, for example, the novel Kalte Wut by Volker Mauersberger was published, which is distributed and sold nationwide.)

"We do everything that the big publishers do, but with a regional focus." (Quote from Hejo Emons)

This also expresses the current programmatic motto regionally worldwide . Around 100 titles were published in 2010, 111 new titles in 2011, and 150 new publications are planned for 2012.

Program focus

Crime series Cologne Crime

Emons published the first German "regional crime thriller " in the Cologne crime series , which was also marketed as such. The first title appeared in 1984 Tödlicher Klüngel by Christoph Gottwald, who was based on American authors Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung summed up: "The otherwise cozy Cologne appears here in the gloomy flair of those American cities through which Humphrey Bogart once walked. That's a lot for a German crime thriller." The Cologne crime thrillers were soon followed by various sub-series: The children's crime thriller Cologne Thrillers for Pänz and Teens , the Kommissar Löhr-Krimis by Peter Meisenberg and the Köln Krimi Classics , which take place in historical Cologne.
