Public positions

Discussion about the name of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium Remscheid

As a student, Harry Luck campaigned for the Remscheid Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Grammar School to be renamed from 1988 to 1992 , first with a letter to Prime Minister Johannes Rau , and later with a publication in the school newspaper. In the public discussion that followed, a working group of students and teachers was founded, which in 1991, because of Arndt's racist and anti-Semitic statements, spoke out in favor of relieving the school of the name it was given during the Nazi era. The specialist conference on religion passed a resolution in which Arndt, as the school's namesake, was rejected as "not tenable". The reason given was Arndt's "pagan atheist" agitation, which contributed to the history of anti-Semitism, "which culminated in the Shoah of the Jewish people". The teachers' conference followed this vote, and the school conference finally refused to rename it in spring 1992.

In 2004/2005 there was a renewed discussion about the school name, in the course of which Luck positioned himself with an opinion piece in the "Remscheider General-Anzeiger". The former student and journalist Sascha Lehnartz made the contra contribution . In 2006, the Remscheid city council rejected the school's application to rename it the Richard-von-Weizsäcker -Gymnasium with a narrow majority. After the name dispute at the University of Greifswald in 2017, Luck was interviewed again by the local radio station RSG on the subject.

Initiative "No gingerbread before the 1st Advent"

As the founder of the Facebook initiative "No gingerbread before the 1st of Advent", Luck pointed out in numerous articles and interviews that the early sale of Advent and Christmas items from August emptied the meaning of the pre-Christmas period. He repeatedly referred to the "Advent is in December" initiative of the Evangelical Church.
