Churches

Catholic Church Rosbach

Church history

A chapel in Rosbach mentioned in the Liber valoris in 1274 probably belonged to the parish of Hamm (Sieg) or Leuscheid .

In 1486 Rosbach became its own parish, before the old church, of which the tower still stands today, must have been built. In 1572 the Reformation was carried out by Pastor Mittler in Rosbach . From 1607 to 1609 a Catholic pastor was again noted on site. In 1612 the community converted to the Protestant faith.

Since 1725 the mission office in Leuscheid has offered Catholic services in Rosbach again. In 1744/45, at the request of the Cologne councilor Rütten, a Catholic chapel ( old chapel ) was built, which was used as a local mission.

From 1763 to 1767 the old three-aisled nave of the Salvatorkirche was replaced by a hall building, which was also furnished in rococo style . The architectural concept for this building can be traced back to the master builder Johann Georg Leydel . The implementation planning and implementation was in the hands of the master mason Wirths from Altenkirchen. Heinrich Fischer and Peter Brett can be proven to be master carpenters.

The Catholic parish church of St. Joseph in neo-Gothic style was consecrated in 1898. The design comes from the Cologne architect Theodor Kremer ; construction began in 1896.

In 1805 Rosbach became an independent Catholic parish again.

The church registers of Rosbach with baptism, marriage and death dates are among the oldest surviving church registers in Germany. The entries go back to the time before the Thirty Years War .
