The "Unkelmühle" restaurant, which has since been demolished, was a popular dance hall in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Unkelmühle is a part of the municipality of Windeck on the border with Eitorf .

history

The first mention of the Unkelmühle, a water mill on the Sieg , took place in 1601. In 1726 the Unkelmühle was owned by the Counts of Nesselrode . The Walloon painter Reinier Roidkin made a drawing of the old mill on behalf of the count. In 1862 a halter mill builder married a maid from Unkelmühle.

power plant

In 1921, the Eitorfer-based company Hegeling , the forerunner of Boge GmbH , built a dam and a run- of -river power plant, which was still in existence today, with an output of 8,000 hp to power the factory.

The restaurant above the inlet channel to the power plant was bought up by the Rhineland Regional Council after a fire in 1984 and demolished on December 28, 1986 to straighten the course of the road. An ongoing application by the municipal council for monument protection was thus undermined.

The power plant itself was listed on January 27, 1992.

Since 2011, the barrage has been converted as part of the NRW fish protection pilot plant .

Quarry

A quarry was also part of the Unkelmühle for many years . Up until the 1960s "hammer-proof" quarry stones of excellent quality were broken and cut there. In the 1930s, these were transported by horse and cart to the Eitorf train station and from there onwards, for example. B. for the construction of the motorway bridge to Cologne. This greywacke stone was so pressure-resistant that it was used almost as equivalent to basalt . Many older houses in the area still have a quarry stone plinth or a quarry stone facing on the ground floor.

In the 1930s, scientific studies were carried out on the deposits in the rock layers in the quarry. The rich fossil deposits were exploited by Walter Schriel in 1932 and 1933 .
