The area of the municipality of Windeck was visited by groups of people hunting as early as the Paleolithic , as shown by the discovery of a "retoucher" - a stone that was used to work on other stones - near Windeck- Dreisel , which, based on parallels in the Neuwied basin, shows in the time around 11,000 BC Can be dated BC. The stone contains an animal engraving on both sides, of which the image of a cow elk is still clearly recognizable, while the engraving on the other side is damaged and can no longer be clearly interpreted. The later history of Windeck is linked to the history of Windeck Castle . After the Counts of Thuringia and the Archbishops of Cologne , Windeck went to the Duchy of Berg via the Counts of Sayn and formed the Bergisches Land's own administrative department as the Windeck Office . Desolations such as abandoned and lost are mentioned.

Under Napoleon's rule, the Mairie Dattenfeld and Rosbach were merged into one municipality in the canton of Waldbröl . The municipality worked from Burg Mauel , and there was a military command in Burg Hof . After the Congress of Vienna , the area became part of the State of Prussia , where it belonged to the district of Waldbröl as the municipality of Dattenfeld . Herchen had then been added to the municipality of Eitorf and as a result came to the Uckerath district and with it to the Siegkreis . In 1932 the Waldbröl district was dissolved and the Dattenfeld office came to the Siegkreis as the communities Dattenfeld and Rosbach. On August 1, 1969, the three communities Herchen, Dattenfeld and Rosbach were combined in the community of Windeck. It was planned to reassign Herchen to Eitorf. However, this regulation would have brought too few inhabitants for the community of Windeck and was rejected.

The greatest destruction took place in the Rosbach area. Adolf Hitler's elite SS troops were probably stationed in Rosbach. This was the reason why Rosbach was attacked by 20 British bombers at around 11:40 a.m. on February 2, 1945. The bombs fell mainly in the churchyard. They destroyed today's mayor's office, which used to be the pharmacy. Owners and temporary workers died. Next to it was a doctor's practice, which at the time served as a primary school. Some students died, even though many parents or teachers sent them home, when they saw an English plane at 9 a.m. and feared the bombing. Furthermore, the houses near the churchyard were completely destroyed, families were wiped out and the houses in the area were no longer habitable. At the beginning of March 1945 the Siegbrücke was destroyed as part of the “Scorched Earth” project. The church in the churchyard was spared, it survived the attack, only the panes cracked during the attack. The church was demolished before the attack. Two of the three bells were melted down from the tower for war material, the third was only spared because it was a listed building. Many shops were destroyed, including the Rosbacher Hof, hairdresser shopkeeper and smaller hotels. The death toll amounted to 42 residents, but doctors and some families were among them. The area was occupied by the Americans after the attack. The SS troops moved on to other areas.

Reconstruction began around 1946. Many men were still prisoners of war, so the women had to start rebuilding the villages. They took the best preserved materials and tried to make houses and apartments habitable again. The Hermes company helped with steel support for the construction of the railway traffic, as the railway bridges had also been completely destroyed. Gradually the soldiers returned from the war and with that a boom in reconstruction began. The Siegbrücke was made crossable again with a footpath so that the other side of the Sieg could be supplied again. When North Rhine-Westphalia was founded on August 23, 1946, the supply was still catastrophic, as the business routes were disrupted by the different occupation areas and the residents could not buy enough food so that the families could be properly fed. Reconstruction was difficult at the time, especially immediately after the attack in Rosbach and Germany's surrender. The population could not buy enough, which could have ensured a targeted and safe construction. The apartments were poorly prepared and many soldiers had to look for their families when they returned because they no longer lived in the same house as before.

There are various reasons why the local government reform took place. After the war there was no longer any connection between the individual small communities as the growing infrastructure and improved mobility enabled the population to move to the cities and towns that met their needs. They found a “space beyond the municipality as their living space” and thus no longer claimed the internal business of the municipality, so that the income was limited to the municipalities outside. Another reason is the increased expectation of the population: “The citizen in the country expects the same offer that the cities have been able to offer their residents for a long time.” Overall, this led to the planning of a regional reform, also for reasons of better administration. One wanted to improve the old borders between the communities, as these were mostly already 200 years old. These borders were no longer wanted, because the old borders could no longer be taken over due to the war and the new economy, especially the industries. The small communities were to be merged with other communities so that they could be administered better, since the very small communities could not afford the administrative act due to insufficient population. The districts in North Rhine-Westphalia were also affected, as many were not able to “guarantee the high and higher level of care for the population.” The independent cities in North Rhine-Westphalia were also associated with great fluctuations, they had between 43,000 and 856,000 inhabitants and 12 km² and 271 km² area.

It was therefore decided to draw up reports that should determine how many inhabitants a municipality has and how the supply is to be handled. Municipalities should have at least 8,000 inhabitants - in exceptional cases 5,000 inhabitants - and the basic services should be accessible within half an hour by public transport. Communities with more than 30,000 inhabitants should also serve as a supply center for the smaller communities. At the time of the municipal territorial reform, the Windecks area comprised the three communities Dattenfeld (4949 inhabitants, 27.2 km² area), Herchen (5313 inhabitants, 46.19 km² area) and Rosbach (6627 inhabitants, 33.83 km² area) . This meant that all three congregations were too small to remain a separate congregation. The regional reform provided for these three municipalities to be merged to form the municipality of Windeck and assigned to the Rhein-Sieg district. But the population resisted. The municipality of Herchen in particular did not want to go to the municipality of Windeck, as it tended to go there due to its proximity to Eitorf. After minor friction between the politicians and the population, an agreement was reached. Thus, on August 1, 1969, the community of Windeck was founded with a population of 17,452 and an area of 107.24 km². This reorganization brought about various changes. Among other things, the Windeck fire brigade was founded. Before each municipality had its own fire brigade, these were now called fire fighting groups and administered by the Windeck fire brigade. The first parish director was Mr. Krämer.

coat of arms

The municipality of Windeck was granted the right to use a coat of arms in a certificate issued by the district president in Cologne on May 4, 1972.

Windeck coat of arms
Blazon : “The coat of arms shows above in silver (white) a striding, blue crowned, armored and tongued lion; below in blue a silver (white) man in armor, wielding a silver (white) and gold (yellow) -stitched battle hammer. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms was taken over from the former Office Dattenfeld / Rosbach and shows, in a slightly modified form, the heraldic animal of the Bergisch sovereign, belonging to the Duchy of Berg , whereby this lion is not double-tailed in contrast to the standing Bergisch lion. The "knight" comes from an old coat of arms that showed a miner with a hammer.
